South Africa's Bongi Mbonambi fit to face New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup final

South Africa's hooker, Bongi Mbonambi, has been given the green light to participate in the Rugby World Cup final scheduled for this Saturday, according to a statement by World Rugby on Thursday.

This decision comes after an investigation found insufficient evidence to support allegations that Mbonambi used discriminatory language towards England's flanker, Tom Curry (25), during the semi-final match last weekend, which South Africa won 16-15.

In a statement, World Rugby emphasized its commitment to taking care discrimination allegations seriously, and after a thorough review of all available evidence, including match footage, audio recordings, and input from both teams, the governing body concluded that there was not enough evidence to proceed with charges. Consequently, the matter is considered closed, unless new evidence emerges.

World Rugby acknowledged that Tom Curry's allegations were made in good faith, with no suggestion of deliberate falsehood or malice.

However, their decision not to convene an Independent Disciplinary Panel means that Tom Curry's account of the events, along with other available evidence, will not be independently assessed in the disciplinary process.

The RFU (Rugby Football Union) has also asserted that Curry experienced similar abuse from Mbonambi during the Springboks' victory over England last November. Furthermore, England has drawn attention to online abuse directed at Curry.

World Rugby expressed concern about the social media abuse targeting both players in the wake of these events, emphasizing that discrimination, abuse, or hate speech have no place in rugby or society. They called on fans to embrace the sport's core values of respect, integrity, and solidarity.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi shared that he had reached out to Tom Curry and expressed his support, highlighting the impact such incidents can have not only on players but also on their families. He hopes for an end to the situation and for unity among players.
