10-man Botafogo defeat Atletico Mineiro to claim first Copa Libertadores title

Botafogo achieved a historic milestone by winning the Copa Libertadores for the first time, triumphing over fellow Brazilian team Atletico Mineiro with a score of 3-1 on Saturday.

Despite playing nearly the entire match with only ten players following Gregore's red card in the first minute, Botafogo demonstrated remarkable determination and resilience to secure their victory at River Plate's Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.

Gregore received a red card for a reckless, high challenge on Fauto Vera, necessitating a strategic adjustment from Botafogo. However, Atletico Mineiro was unable to capitalize on their numerical advantage.

Veteran forward Hulk had a shot from outside the penalty area saved by John, yet the Belo Horizonte team struggled to apply significant pressure.

Recognizing that the match might not unfold as a defensive battle, Botafogo began to adopt a more offensive approach, which paid off in the 35th minute.

Marlon Freitas's attempt from the edge of the box deflected around a congested area before landing at the feet of Luiz Henrique, who scored from close range.

Demonstrating commendable resolve, Botafogo did not retreat to protect their narrow lead and managed to extend it in the 44th minute.

Atletico defender Guilherme Arana tried to guide the ball back to goalkeeper Everson, but Luiz Henrique intercepted and was brought down by the keeper.

Following a VAR review, a penalty was awarded, which Alex Telles converted confidently, giving Botafogo an unexpected 2-0 lead at halftime.

Atletico, the 2013 Libertadores champions, made three substitutions during the break, which quickly bore fruit as Eduardo Vargas scored with a header from a corner.

As anticipated, Atletico applied late pressure, but Botafogo sealed their victory when Junior Santos completed a counter-attack deep into stoppage time.

With this victory, Botafogo secures a place in the final 32 of next year's FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States.
