10-man Uruguay knock Brazil out of Copa América on penalties after goalless draw

With a place in the semi-finals against in-form Colombia on the line, and a history of high-scoring encounters in recent meetings between the two South American powerhouses, fans in the Sin City were eagerly anticipating an exciting match.

The game was characterized by intense competition, with every pass fiercely contested due to the high stakes involved. The first clear chance fell to Brazil shortly after the half-hour mark, but Darwin Nunez's header narrowly missed the target.

Shortly after, Raphinha found space inside the box and unleashed a powerful shot, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Uruguay's Sergio Rochet.

Rochet played a crucial role in keeping Uruguay in the game, with another important save on Raphinha's shot just before halftime, leaving the teams level as they entered the break.

Neither of the two teams competing in this tournament had fallen behind in the scoreline. After Federico Valverde scored Uruguay's first shot on target with a long-range effort, the atmosphere inside the Allegiant Stadium intensified as the final 30 minutes approached.

Just when Marcelo Bielsa's team believed they had control of the match, Brazil received a lifeline when Nahitan Nandez's yellow card was upgraded to red after a VAR review due to a studs-up challenge on Rodrygo. With Uruguay reduced to 10 men, they had to defend against a hungry Selecao in the remaining minutes.

Despite Uruguay's best efforts, Brazil dominated the game from that point on. However, the Brazilian team struggled to create scoring opportunities when it counted the most. As full-time neared, neither team had a clear advantage, setting the stage for a penalty shootout for the third time in four Copa América quarter-finals.

Having been eliminated from the tournament twice before at this stage on penalties, Uruguay faced a daunting challenge. However, Brazil stumbled at the start with Eder Militao's miss. Uruguay successfully converted their first three penalty kicks and only needed one more after Douglas Luiz hit the post.

The victory was sealed by Manuel Ugarte's final penalty kick after Jose Maria Gimenez missed his earlier chance. As a result, Selecao failed to reach the semi-finals for the first time in three tournaments.

On the other hand, Uruguay advanced to face Colombia in their pursuit of a record 16th Copa América title.
