100 Days to go: Countdown begins for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The countdown has officially begun. With 100 days remaining until the opening match, excitement is building across North America ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a tournament set to redefine the global game.

Giant countdown clocks in Mexico City’s Zócalo, Times Square and Harbour Square have been synchronized to mark the milestone, signaling that football’s biggest spectacle is now just over three months away.

When the tournament kicks off on June 11, it will usher in the largest World Cup ever staged, featuring an expanded format, cutting-edge technology, and a record number of matches across three host nations.

A Historic Opening at Estadio Azteca

The tournament will begin at the legendary Estadio Azteca, one of football’s most iconic stadiums. Already etched in World Cup history, the stadium hosted finals in 1970 and 1986. In 2026, it will become the first venue to stage matches in three different World Cups.

Hosts Mexico national football team are scheduled to open the tournament against South Africa national football team, kicking off a 104-match football marathon that will run until July 19.

The final will be played at MetLife Stadium, officially branded for the tournament as New York New Jersey Stadium, one of the largest sporting venues in the United States.

A New Era: The Expanded 48-Team Tournament

The 2026 edition marks a major structural shift for the World Cup. For the first time in history, 48 national teams will compete instead of the traditional 32. The new format includes 12 groups of four teams, expanding both the scale and global representation of the tournament.

So far, 42 teams have secured qualification, while the remaining six spots will be decided through playoffs.

Among the major contenders already qualified are:

  • Argentina national football team
  • France national football team
  • Brazil national football team
  • England national football team
  • Germany national football team

Tournament organizers believe the expansion will increase global competitiveness and open the door to more surprise runs from emerging football nations.

A Continent-Wide Tournament

The 2026 World Cup will be the first ever hosted by three countries:
United States, Canada and Mexico. A total of 16 host cities will stage matches.

United States (11 host cities)

  • Atlanta
  • Boston
  • Dallas
  • Houston
  • Kansas City
  • Los Angeles
  • Miami
  • Philadelphia
  • Seattle
  • San Francisco
  • New York City

Canada (2 host cities)

  • Toronto
  • Vancouver

Mexico (3 host cities)

  • Mexico City
  • Monterrey
  • Guadalajara

The majority of matches, 78 of the 104 games — will take place in the United States.

New rules set to debut

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has approved several rule innovations expected to debut during the tournament.

Timed Substitutions

Players leaving the field must exit within 10 seconds. If they fail to do so, their team will temporarily play with one fewer player for one minute.

Five-Second Restart Rule

Goalkeepers and players taking throw-ins will have a five-second visual countdown to restart play. If they exceed the limit, possession will be awarded to the opposition.

Expanded VAR Review

For the first time, VAR will be able to overturn clearly incorrect second yellow cards, potentially preventing controversial dismissals in key matches.

The Most Technological World Cup Yet

Technology will play a major role in the 2026 tournament. Stadiums will feature ultra-fast 6G connectivity, while the tournament will use an upgraded semi-automated offside system capable of generating instant 3D visualizations.

Fans inside stadiums will receive real-time offside animations via augmented reality, allowing them to see decisions unfold instantly on their phones. The aim is to create a viewing experience closer to a high-definition interactive broadcast than ever before.

United States’ Path in the Group Stage

The host United States men's national soccer team will begin their campaign against Paraguay national football team on June 12 in Los Angeles. Led by star forward Christian Pulisic, the Americans will then face:

  • Australia national soccer team — June 19 in Seattle
  • UEFA Playoff Winner — June 25 in Los Angeles
  • The U.S. hopes to capitalize on home support in pursuit of its best World Cup run in modern history.

With millions of international visitors expected, organizers believe the World Cup will transform North America into the global cultural center for over a month. Massive fan zones across cities such as Miami, Toronto and Monterrey are expected to attract more than six million tourists during the tournament.

For nearly 40 days, the continent will become the epicenter of world sport. And with 100 days left on the clock, anticipation is rapidly turning into excitement.
