The countdown to the FIFA World Cup 2026 officially began after the tournament draw was conducted in Washington, D.C., setting the stage for the most expanded World Cup in history.

Staged at the Kennedy Center, the ceremony was attended by United States President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighting the political and symbolic importance of the first-ever 48-team World Cup hosted across USA, Mexico and Canada.

While much of the early focus centered on Trump receiving FIFA’s newly created Peace Prize, attention quickly shifted to football as the 12 groups for the tournament were officially confirmed.

Mexico will open the tournament against South Africa on June 11, 2026, in Mexico City, a repeat of the famous 2010 World Cup opener.

Why did Trump receive the FIFA Peace Prize?

FIFA confirmed that Donald Trump became the first-ever recipient of the FIFA Peace Prize. According to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the award recognizes Trump’s “exceptional and extraordinary actions” in promoting peace and unity worldwide.
