2026 World Cup Playoffs: Possible Opponents, Schedule, Format, and Venue

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the venues, format, and schedule for the African playoffs of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown that will decide the continent’s final representative at the global showpiece.
For Nigeria, who earned a playoff spot with a commanding 4–0 win over Benin Republic, this is the final hurdle in their quest to secure a return to the World Cup.
Morocco to host the African Playoff Tournament
CAF announced that Morocco will host the playoff mini-tournament, which will bring together the four best runners-up from the nine qualification groups after Matchday 10. The North African nation, which will also host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, will stage the decisive matches at its world-class facilities.
According to CAF’s circular to member associations, the semi-final matches will take place on November 13, 2025, while the final will follow on November 16, 2025.
The winner of the playoff will advance to the intercontinental play-off in March 2026, joining teams from Asia, South America, Oceania, and Concacaf to battle for the final 2026 World Cup berth.
Playoff Seeding and Possible Opponents
The FIFA World Rankings for October 2025, set to be released on October 23, will determine the seeding for the draw. The format pairs the highest-ranked team among the four runners-up against the fourth-ranked, while the second and third-ranked teams face each other in the other semi-final.
At the moment, the likely contenders for the playoffs include:
- Nigeria
- Gabon
- Cameroon
- Burkina Faso
- DR Congo
Only four of these nations will qualify based on final group standings, making the competition for those playoff places as fierce as ever.
Format and Rules
Each match in the playoff mini-tournament will be played as a single-leg knockout fixture. If any match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, it will proceed to extra time, followed—if necessary—by a penalty shootout.
Teams will be allowed five substitutions, with an additional substitution permitted during extra time.
The winner of this mini-tournament will then advance to the FIFA intercontinental playoff, where six teams from different confederations will compete for the final two spots at the 2026 World Cup.
Nigeria’s Path to Qualification
The Super Eagles, led by head coach Eric Chelle, sealed their playoff place in style with a 4–0 thrashing of Benin in Uyo. Victor Osimhen’s hat-trick and Frank Onyeka’s late goal lifted Nigeria’s hopes after a shaky start to their qualification campaign.
Now, all eyes are on the FIFA rankings and CAF’s playoff draw, which will determine Nigeria’s potential opponents in November. With form, fitness, and rankings all playing crucial roles, Nigeria’s journey to the 2026 World Cup is far from over—but very much alive.
