AC Milan 3-1 AS Roma: Giroud leads Milan past lacklustre Roma

AC Milan stretched their undefeated streak at home against AS Roma to six matches, emerging victorious with a 3-1 scoreline at San Siro. This triumph narrowed the gap between them and their rivals, Inter Milan, at the summit of the Serie A table to a margin of nine points.

Roma began the match brightly, but it was Milan who took the lead against the run of play. Yacine Adli opened his account for the season with a well-executed finish, putting Milan ahead within 11 minutes.

Milan almost extended their lead through a cross-come-shot from Theo Hernandez, which narrowly missed embarrassing Mile Svilar, making his first league start of the season.

Despite falling behind, Roma continued with their attacking style of play. Zeki Celik's strike was impressively saved by Mike Maignan, and Maignan had to make another smart save from Leandro Spinazzola shortly before halftime. Roma felt unlucky to be trailing at the break.

Milan came out stronger in the second half and had a great chance to double their lead when Matteo Gabbia's header went horribly wrong. However, Olivier Giroud, a more reliable goalscorer, made up for it by heading home his 10th Serie A goal of the season, assisted by Simon Kjaer. Giroud has now reached double figures in three consecutive league campaigns, becoming the first Milan player to do so since Alexandre Pato.

With memories of last season's 2-2 draw in this fixture, Roma had hopes of equalizing when they were awarded a penalty. Leandro Paredes calmly converted the penalty, scoring his first goal of the campaign.

However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Hernandez unleashed a powerful strike off the crossbar to restore Milan's two-goal lead, assisted by Giroud.

In stoppage time, substitute Yunus Musah came close to adding to the scoreline, but his shot rebounded off the post. The result marks Roma's third consecutive away league defeat, the first time this has occurred since 2021, and leaves them trailing in the league standings.Roma began the match brightly, but it was Milan who took the lead against the run of play.
