AC Milan announce departure of manager Stefano Pioli

AC Milan has officially announced the departure of manager Stefano Pioli, who assumed the position in 2019 and successfully guided the club to the Serie A title in 2022.

Pioli's departure was widely anticipated following a mixed season for the club. Although they finished second in Serie A, they were unable to mount a serious challenge against rivals Inter for the title.

Additionally, their campaign in the Champions League ended in disappointment as they were eliminated in the group stage. Their exits in the Coppa Italia and Europa League were also underwhelming.

In an official statement, AC Milan expressed their sincere gratitude to Stefano Pioli and his entire staff for their leadership over the past five years. They acknowledged his instrumental role in securing an unforgettable league title and re-establishing AC Milan as a consistent presence in top European competitions.

The statement also praised Pioli's professionalism and personal touch, which greatly contributed to the growth of the squad and embodied the club's core values.

While Pioli achieved hero status by leading AC Milan to their first league title in 11 years in 2022, he struggled to build upon that success. The club failed to mount another title challenge under his guidance, and although they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season, they were convincingly defeated by Inter.

Despite a comfortable second-place finish in the league this season, the lack of cup success has led fans to call for change.

Pioli expressed his gratitude to AC Milan for the opportunity to be a part of the club's history, acknowledging the support and commitment of the ownership, management, team, staff, and everyone at Milanello and Casa Milan.

He also extended a special thanks to the passionate fans who have unwaveringly supported AC Milan throughout the years.

It is reported that Lille manager Paulo Fonseca, who previously managed Roma, is the frontrunner to take over as the new manager, with a deal almost finalized.
