AC Milan's Fonseca remains committed to title challenge despite Napoli setback

AC Milan's position in Serie A has further deteriorated following a 2-0 defeat at home to league leaders Napoli on Tuesday. Despite this setback, manager Paulo Fonseca (51) remains optimistic about the possibility of clinching the title.
Currently, Milan finds themselves 11 points adrift of Napoli. Although they have a game in hand, this marks their third league loss of the season, placing them in a challenging position not only against Napoli but also against other title contenders such as Inter Milan and Juventus.
When questioned about the Scudetto being a target, Fonseca expressed his determination, emphasizing that the team is not ready to concede at this point in the season. Milan's struggles have been exacerbated by the absence of key players, including the suspended Theo Hernandez and Tijjani Reijnders.
"I cannot claim otherwise. Particularly given our performance, the team's response to adversity, and the unity displayed despite missing crucial players," Fonseca stated in an interview with DAZN.
"No team has secured the league title after nine matches, nor has any team lost it at this stage; thus, we must persist in our development. It is evident that we will require positive results to remain in contention."
The coach accepted responsibility for the recent defeat but expressed satisfaction with his team's reaction after conceding an early goal from Romelu Lukaku.
"I bear full responsibility for the events on the pitch, and once again, I acknowledge this," Fonseca remarked.
"Starting a match with a goal against from Napoli within five minutes is challenging, yet if we analyze the outcome, they scored two goals while we generated opportunities.
"The team responded well at the start, playing positive and quality football. Competing against a Napoli side that defends resolutely in front of their penalty area is no easy task."
