Bahrain's Adekoya Bounces Back from Doping Ban to Win Asian Games Hurdles Gold

Bahrain’s Kemi Adekoya, who was stripped of the 2018 title for doping, made a remarkable comeback by winning the gold medal in the 400m hurdles at the Asian Games on Tuesday.
The victory was especially significant as Adekoya returned to the track after serving a four-year ban for testing positive for the prohibited steroid stanozolol.
Adekoya’s journey has been a rollercoaster ride of triumphs and setbacks. In 2014, she clinched the gold medal at the Asian Games after switching her allegiance from Nigeria to Bahrain. Four years later, she repeated her success in Jakarta. However, her accomplishments in 2018 were marred by a doping scandal, which led to her disqualification and a four-year suspension.

Despite the hurdles she faced, Adekoya was determined to make a triumphant return. At the Asian Games in Hangzhou, she clocked a Games-record time of 54.45 seconds in the 400m hurdles, solidifying her remarkable comeback. She expressed her desire to fight for victory and a new record, emphasizing her focus on maintaining strong mental health and self-belief.
Adekoya’s path to redemption continued when she narrowly defeated fellow Nigerian-born Bahraini Salwa Eid Naser, who was also returning from a doping ban, to claim the 400m title on Saturday.
