Ademola Lookman files transfer request amid accusations of broken promises at Atalanta
The forward, who played a crucial role in the club’s UEFA Europa League triumph, made the announcement via a personal statement posted on social media.
The 26-year-old winger accused the Bergamo-based club of failing to honour a mutual agreement to allow his departure if a “fair offer” was received, despite interest from multiple clubs across Europe.
“Despite now receiving an offer in alignment with what I believe had been discussed, sadly, the club are blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand,” Lookman wrote in a heartfelt message on Instagram.
“There have been numerous clubs that approached Atalanta in the past, and I have previously always stayed loyal.”
A key contributor to Atalanta’s historic Europa League win
Lookman’s request comes after a standout 2023–24 season where he played an instrumental role in helping Atalanta lift their first-ever UEFA Europa League title. His hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin was one of the defining moments of the European football season.
Having joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig for €15 million in August 2022, the Super Eagles forward quickly established himself as one of Serie A’s most exciting attackers. He scored on his league debut and became an integral part of Gian Piero Gasperini’s system, contributing goals, assists, and flair across two seasons.
In 2024, Lookman made history by becoming the first active Atalanta player to receive a Ballon d’Or nomination, and was subsequently named CAF African Footballer of the Year, cementing his status as a continental star.

In his statement, Lookman detailed his emotional attachment to the city of Bergamo and the Atalanta fanbase. He expressed disappointment at how contract talks and transfer discussions have been handled behind closed doors.
“This place has felt like home, and I’ve always tried to repay that love – even in moments where things haven’t been easy behind the scenes,” he said.
“Winning the Europa League and standing shoulder to shoulder with my teammates that night in Dublin… was one of the proudest moments of my career so far.”
Despite his loyalty and significant contributions, the Nigerian international believes the club’s recent stance has left him with no option but to go public.
“After many months of broken promises and what I feel has been poor treatment towards me as both a human being and as a professional footballer, I sadly feel I have no choice but to speak out.”
Lookman revealed that he and the club had previously agreed that if a suitable offer was presented, Atalanta would allow him to make a move. However, the player claims the club has backtracked on this understanding.
“Myself and the ownership of the club have been in agreement that now is the right time, and the club were clear with me that if a fair offer came in, they would allow me to move.”
Appeal to Fans and hope for amicable exit
The winger also used his statement to address the Atalanta faithful directly, acknowledging their unwavering support and apologizing for the situation.
“To the fans – the heartbeat of this club – I want to say this: I’m truly sorry it’s come to this. I hope you can understand this incredibly difficult situation. It’s simply about standing up for what I believe is fair and right.”
He concluded by expressing hope for a peaceful resolution, stating he is still open to working with the club to find an “amicable solution for all parties as soon as possible.”

Several top clubs across Europe are reportedly monitoring the situation closely, including teams from the Premier League, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1, where Lookman’s dynamic playing style and goal threat could provide an instant boost.
