Ademola Lookman: Playing for Nigeria Transformed My Career

Super Eagles and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman has credited his decision to represent Nigeria at the international level as a pivotal moment in his career. The 27-year-old, nominated for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, shared how donning the green and white jersey brought a positive turnaround.

Born in England, Lookman previously played for the Three Lions' youth teams, including winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017 alongside Dominic Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. However, after struggling for consistent success in England and Germany, the former Everton winger opted to switch allegiance to Nigeria. That decision coincided with his move to Italian Serie A side Atalanta, marking the start of a career resurgence.

A Career-Changing Decision

Reflecting on his journey, Lookman said:

“It was massive for me because that was really the big turning point in my career. I think ever since I put on the Super Eagles jersey, it’s been fruitful, you know. We’ve been able to achieve a lot as a team, and we’re still going strong.”

Lookman also highlighted the team spirit within the Super Eagles, which he experienced during their journey to the final of the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON):

“The camaraderie of the team is something very special. We shared that in the last AFCON, and we got to the final. Unfortunately, we came up a bit short, but the foundations are there. It’s a fantastic feeling to represent my country with pride.”

Recognition and Achievements

In the past 18 months, Lookman has achieved significant success both at club and international levels. His stellar performances earned him a spot among the final five nominees for the prestigious CAF Player of the Year award—making him the only Super Eagles player to reach that stage. Fellow Nigerian and teammate William Troost-Ekong was also initially nominated but did not make the final cut.

From his impactful displays at Atalanta to his key contributions for Nigeria, Lookman’s story underscores the rewards of taking bold steps in his career. As he continues to shine on the international stage, he remains a beacon of inspiration for players weighing their international allegiance options.
