AFCON Qualifiers: CAF Silent as Super Eagles Stranded in Libya for 13 Hours

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has remained silent following the ordeal of Nigeria's Super Eagles, who were stranded for 13 hours at Al Abraq Airport in Libya en route to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights.

The Nigerian team, along with officials, faced unexpected difficulties after their flight, initially scheduled to land in Benghazi, was rerouted to Al Abraq Airport. Players and staff were left without food, internet access, or proper resting facilities, forcing them to sleep on benches in the airport while their luggage littered the floor. Photos and videos of the incident have sparked outrage across Nigeria.

Despite the mounting criticism, CAF has yet to release any official statement regarding the incident. The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed strong disapproval, comparing the situation to a form of "hostage-taking."

Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has escalated the matter to key authorities, including the Foreign Affairs Minister and the National Security Adviser. Enoh revealed that efforts were made overnight to ensure the safety and well-being of the Super Eagles, who are currently preparing for the crucial AFCON qualifier.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), also condemned the treatment of the Super Eagles and called on CAF to address the issue promptly. In response, the Nigerian authorities have dispatched essential supplies to the team. The Nigerian Community in Benghazi, led by Mr. Morris Eromosele, provided the necessary provisions and internet access to the stranded players early Tuesday morning.

As of now, the situation remains unresolved, with the Super Eagles' qualification campaign facing additional challenges due to the incident in Libya.
