Al Hilal eliminate Manchester City in seven-goal thriller to reach Club World Cup Quarterfinals

Manchester City's quest for another global trophy came to an abrupt and dramatic end on Monday night, as Al Hilal pulled off one of the greatest upsets in FIFA Club World Cup history, defeating the reigning European champions 4-3 after extra time in a pulsating clash in Orlando, Florida.

The seven-goal spectacle saw Marcos Leonardo emerge as the hero, bagging a brace including the 112th-minute winnerthat sent Pep Guardiola’s stunned side crashing out of the competition and ensured Al Hilal’s progression to the quarterfinals, where they will face Brazilian side Fluminense.

Manchester City, who have been dominant under Guardiola in international club competitions, came into this match as overwhelming favourites. They started like it, too, controlling possession, pushing Al Hilal deep into their own half, and opening the scoring early.

Bernardo Silva gave City the lead in the ninth minute after capitalising on defensive chaos in the box, and it appeared the Cityzens would cruise through the round. But the second half unravelled in shocking fashion. Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo equalised with a poacher’s header after a loose ball fell kindly in the box. Moments later, Malcom, fed brilliantly by ex-Man City full-back Joao Cancelo, turned the game on its head with a powerful strike to give Al Hilal a 2-1 lead.

Erling Haaland immediately responded with his 301st career goal, drawing City level at 2-2 in a game that now had the hallmarks of a classic. City almost snatched the win in the 84th minute, but a goal-line clearance denied them the breakthrough and sent the game into extra time.

Extra time brought more drama. Just four minutes in, Kalidou Koulibaly rose highest from a corner to head Al Hilal back in front. Guardiola rolled the dice, introducing Phil Foden, and the England star delivered, smashing in a left-footed equaliser from a Rayan Cherki assist to make it 3-3.

However, there would be one final, decisive twist.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, one of Al Hilal’s marquee midfielders, floated a header into a dangerous area where Leonardo tucked it past Ederson in the 112th minute for his second of the night.

The final minutes were frenetic. Manchester City threw everything forward. Even goalkeeper Ederson came up for a last-minute corner. But Al Hilal held on to seal a historic 4-3 victory.

Guardiola suffers first-ever Club World Cup defeat

Prior to this defeat, Pep Guardiola had never lost in the Club World Cup, winning titles with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City. In his previous 11 matches in the competition, his teams had conceded just four goals combined. In Orlando, they shipped another four in just one match, a night that shattered records and expectations alike.

Al Hilal vs Fluminense: Quarterfinal clash set

With this monumental win, Al Hilal advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face Fluminense, who earlier upset Inter Milan 2-0 in another statement result from the South American champions. The all-non-European quarterfinal now ensures that one non-UEFA team will make the semifinals, avoiding the oft-critiqued “second Champions League” feel of past Club World Cup editions.
