Albania 0-1 Spain: Spain defeat Albania to complete perfect group stage

Spain demonstrated their credentials as potential champions of Euro 2024 once again, with Ferran Torres' goal securing a 1-0 victory over Albania. Despite fielding a second-string lineup, Spain maintained their perfect record in Group B, winning all three matches.
Having already secured a spot in the last-16 as group winners, Spain's coach Luis de la Fuente made 10 changes to the team that defeated reigning champions Italy.
Although Spain lacked the fluidity displayed in their previous matches, several players impressed De La Fuente, particularly man-of-the-match Torres, whose clinical 13th-minute goal settled the contest.
Spain's achievement of winning every group game, without conceding a goal, mirrored the success of their 2008 European champions. On the other hand, Albania's journey in the tournament came to an end as they finished fourth in the group with only one point.
Spain finished the group stage with nine points, while Italy secured second place with four points after a last-minute 1-1 draw against Croatia, who finished third with two points. Croatia now hopes to advance as one of the third-placed finishers.
Albania's defeat also had implications for other teams, as France, Netherlands, and England all progressed to the next round before their final group matches.
Only centre-back Aymeric Laporte remained in the starting lineup for Spain, as De La Fuente rotated his squad and rested players like the talented Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.
Albania may have seen this match as an opportunity to make history by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time. Their passionate fans, dressed in red and black, created an electric atmosphere along the River Rhine on a warm summer evening.
Despite the anticipation, Spain quickly reminded everyone of the depth in their squad, leaving no doubt about their strength in the tournament.
Dani Olmo managed to break through the Albanian defense with a precise pass, and Torres, substituting for Yamal on the right wing, executed his left-footed shot perfectly, hitting the inside of the post for his 20th goal in 44 games for Spain.
"I will take advantage of the opportunities given by the coach, whether it's scoring goals, providing assists, or contributing defensively. The most important thing is to secure the victory," Torres stated.
"I have always been determined to continue making history with Spain. I will not rest until I achieve that."
Spain, aiming for a record fourth Euros title, will face a third-placed team in the round of 16 in Cologne on June 30.
"I am not concerned about our next opponent. We are a strong team, working hard, and the coach has us all motivated," Torres added.
Wearing a pastel-yellow kit, Spain dominated the pace of the game in the first half, leaving Albania with little to cheer for despite their efforts.
Albania took 45 minutes to force David Raya into a save, and it was a good one as the goalkeeper, on loan at Arsenal from Brentford, leaped to deny Kristjan Asllani's powerful shot.
Spain occasionally shifted into high gear and nearly doubled their lead just after halftime, with Joselu displaying agility to send a volley over the bar from Alejandro Grimaldo's cross.
Albania's supporters found their voices again when Armando Broja came off the bench, and he almost made an immediate impact by attempting to chip a shot over Raya, who managed to deflect it with his left arm.
As Spain eased off the gas, Albania finished strongly and provided Raya with more opportunities to prove himself with some impressive saves.
In the end, Albania could not avoid their ninth defeat in nine encounters with Spain, but Sylvinho's team can return home with their heads held high after holding their own in a tough group.
