Alcaraz anticipates hungry Djokovic to be a major threat in Australia

Novak Djokovic, aged 37, is anticipated to be "extremely formidable" and poised to contend for Grand Slam titles upon his return to competition at the upcoming Australian Open, following a disappointing 2024 season, according to world number three Carlos Alcaraz, who is 21 years old.

After securing victories in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments last year, Djokovic experienced a subpar season by his exceptional standards, marking the first time since the injury-riddled 2017 that he was unable to claim a major title.

The Serbian player did, however, secure his first Olympic gold medal by defeating Alcaraz in Paris shortly after their Wimbledon final, serving as a reminder that he should never be underestimated.

Alcaraz remarked to reporters at the ATP Finals about Djokovic's potential at the Australian Open, stating, "He is a very dangerous player."

"We have seen in the past that it does not matter if he has not participated in an official match for two, three, or four months; he will return and have the capability to win the tournament, demonstrating a very high level of tennis."

"If he approaches Australia with a strong desire to compete, he will undoubtedly be among the favorites to win."

Djokovic withdrew from the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin due to injury, but Alcaraz expressed confidence that he will be revitalized when the first Grand Slam of 2025 commences on January 12.

The Serbian aims to secure a record-extending 11th title, while Alcaraz seeks his first championship at Melbourne Park.

"He will certainly be refreshed, having spent ample time with his family," Alcaraz noted following his exit from the group stage in Italy.

"He has had the opportunity to practice extensively, which is advantageous for any tennis player entering a tournament with motivation."

"It is sure to be exciting to watch."
