Alcaraz defeats Davidovich Fokina to reach Monte Carlo Masters final

Carlos Alcaraz advanced to his first Masters 1000 final in over a year with a hard-fought 7-6(2), 6-4 win against fellow Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Monte Carlo Masters on Saturday. The 21-year-old was made to work for his victory, needing to save five match points in a tense contest before sealing the win with a forehand down the line.

Alcaraz will now face Lorenzo Musetti in Sunday’s final, after the Italian came from a set down to defeat Alex De Minaur 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) in a rain-affected semi-final that lasted over two and a half hours.

Despite being the second seed, Alcaraz faced significant resistance throughout the match. He converted only three of 19 break point opportunities and had to dig deep after squandering three set points in a first set that stretched beyond an hour. Davidovich Fokina’s defensive prowess kept the match competitive, but Alcaraz elevated his level in the second set, holding serve confidently without facing a single break point.

"It's been a long time," Alcaraz said following his first Masters final appearance since winning Indian Wells last year. "I just had to be patient and believe that this moment was going to come again. Sometimes the people are not patient, they want me to make the final in every tournament."

After sealing victory, Alcaraz and Davidovich Fokina shared a heartfelt embrace at the net, with the world No. 3 praising his opponent’s resilience.
"I think I played really good tennis from the beginning until the last point," Alcaraz added. "I tried to take the chances he gave me in the match. He saved a lot of break points and match points, but I'm really happy... The most important thing is that I'm feeling great physically."

Musetti, who had knocked out three-time Monte Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals, earned his first appearance in a Masters 1000 final. He credited his patience as key to overcoming De Minaur’s consistency.
"I always struggle to start and find a rhythm but today Alex was playing really solid and the conditions were hard," Musetti said. "It was slow today with the rain and was not easy to break through the Alex wall. I started to be more patient and that was the key."

Alcaraz leads Musetti 3-1 in their head-to-head meetings, but the Italian claimed victory the last time they faced off on clay in the 2022 Hamburg final. Sunday's clash promises to be a high-stakes showdown between two of the tour’s most talented young stars.
