Alcaraz defeats Jarry in straight sets in impressive Paris Masters opener

Spain's Carlos Alcaraz (21) commenced his journey at the Paris Masters on Tuesday with a decisive victory, defeating Chilean Nicolas Jarry (29) with a score of 7-5, 6-1.
Having received a bye in the first round, Alcaraz quickly established a 3-0 advantage in his round of 32 match. However, Jarry managed to narrow the gap before Alcaraz ultimately secured the first set at 7-5.
In the second set, Alcaraz displayed dominant form, allowing his Chilean opponent only a single game as he surged to victory.
The 21-year-old Spaniard is considered the frontrunner to capture his inaugural hard court title in Paris, particularly following the withdrawal of Italian world number one Jannik Sinner from the tournament earlier on Tuesday due to an intestinal virus.
Alcaraz is set to compete against either Frenchman Ugo Humbert or American Marcos Giron in the round of 16.
In other matches, Argentine Francisco Cerundolo triumphed over Russian sixth seed Andrey Rublev with a score of 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7/5) in a contest that lasted nearly two hours and 20 minutes.
Poland's 12th seed Hubert Hurkacz faced an upset, losing to American Alex Michelsen with a score of 1-6, 3-6 in just over 50 minutes.
Alex de Minaur secured a victory against Argentina's Mariano Navone, winning 7-5, 6-1, thereby keeping his hopes alive for a spot in the ATP Finals next month.
Holger Rune achieved a straightforward win over Matteo Arnaldi with a score of 6-4, 6-4, while Ben Shelton from the USA prevailed in a three-set match against local favorite Corentin Moutet.
In another matchup between France and the USA, 21-year-old French wildcard Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard overcame Frances Tiafoe with a score of 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.
French player Richard Gasquet, who announced his retirement from tennis following next year's French Open, exited the Paris Masters after a 3-6, 4-6 defeat to Belgian Zizou Bergs.
Norwegian seventh seed Casper Ruud and Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas are scheduled to compete later on Tuesday.
