Alcaraz defeats Sinner to win US Open and reclaim World No. 1 ranking

Carlos Alcaraz has cemented his status as the dominant force in men’s tennis after defeating Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the 2025 US Open final. The Spaniard not only secured his second trophy at Flushing Meadows but also reclaimed the No. 1 world ranking from his Italian rival.

Alcaraz outshines rival in historic final

Sunday’s clash inside Arthur Ashe Stadium marked a historic third consecutive Grand Slam final between Alcaraz and Sinner. The 22-year-old Spaniard showed composure and aggression to avenge his Wimbledon loss in July, extending his head-to-head lead over Sinner to 10-5 overall and 6-4 in major titles.

The match was delayed nearly 30 minutes due to heightened security measures triggered by the presence of US President Donald Trump, the first sitting president to attend the US Open since Bill Clinton in 2000. Once play began under the closed roof, Alcaraz quickly found his rhythm.

Sinner, the defending champion and top seed, pushed hard in the second set but struggled to maintain his level as Alcaraz fired 42 winners compared to Sinner’s 21.

This final was yet another chapter in a rivalry that has taken over men’s tennis. Alcaraz and Sinner have now combined to win eight straight Grand Slam titles and 10 of the last 13. The only player to interrupt their streak has been Novak Djokovic, who collected the other three.

In fact, Sunday’s showdown marked the first time in history that the same two men contested three consecutive Slam finals in a single season, a sign of just how far ahead they are from the rest of the field.

Sinner struggles, Alcaraz thrives

Sinner came into the final with an incredible record on hard courts, having won 27 consecutive matches at majors on the surface. But Alcaraz, fully aware of the challenge, attacked from the very start, breaking serve five times and applying constant pressure with his forehand.

The Italian attempted to counter by directing play to Alcaraz’s backhand, which briefly shifted momentum in the second set. Still, Alcaraz’s ability to reset, stay aggressive, and raise his level in the third and fourth sets proved decisive.

With this win, Alcaraz snapped Sinner’s run of four consecutive major final victories and reclaimed the No. 1 ranking, flipping the balance of power once again.

By the Numbers: Alcaraz vs. Sinner

  • Head-to-head: Alcaraz leads 10-5
  • Grand Slam titles: Alcaraz 6 – Sinner 4
  • US Open titles: Alcaraz 2 – Sinner 1
  • Recent Slam finals (2025 season): Alcaraz (French Open, US Open), Sinner (Wimbledon)

Alcaraz now boasts a 61-6 record in 2025 and leads the ATP Tour with seven tournament titles this year, more than his total losses combined.

A Rivalry that defines the future

As Alcaraz lifted the US Open trophy once more, it became even clearer: men’s tennis has entered a new era dominated by two young superstars. For now, Alcaraz has the edge, but Sinner’s resilience and brilliance ensure this rivalry will keep fans on the edge of their seats for years to come.
