Alejandro Garnacho has world class potential says Erik ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes Alejandro Garnacho has all the tools to become a world-class forward but insists the 20-year-old must keep working relentlessly to get there.

Speaking ahead of United’s Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, Ten Hag praised Garnacho’s growing influence in big games but stressed that consistency will be the key to unlocking his full potential.

Garnacho has already enjoyed several standout moments in a United shirt. He assisted Joshua Zirkzee’s debut goal in the 1-0 win over Fulham and scored in the Community Shield against Manchester City, which United eventually lost on penalties. The Argentine also played a starring role in last season’s FA Cup final victory over City, netting alongside Kobbie Mainoo in a 2-1 triumph.

Across the Premier League campaign, Garnacho registered seven goals despite United enduring a turbulent season that saw them finish eighth.

“To transition into a world-class player, he has a considerable journey ahead. It begins with diligent effort,” Ten Hag told reporters. “This dedication has led him to his current position and will propel him toward becoming a world-class player… every top team needs an individual with the X factor, and Garnacho has that capability. For him, the challenge is consistency.”

Mainoo benefiting from England experience

While Garnacho continues his rise, Ten Hag also singled out Kobbie Mainoo for praise after the midfielder’s impressive summer with England at Euro 2024. The 19-year-old played a key role in Gareth Southgate’s side, earning valuable big-tournament experience.

“Such experiences will undoubtedly aid him in becoming a better player this season,” Ten Hag said. “An ideal midfielder excels in both attacking and defending. Kobbie is capable of fulfilling both roles, functioning effectively as an attacking midfielder or a holding midfielder.”

With United kicking off the season under intense scrutiny, Ten Hag will be hoping that his young talents, Garnacho and Mainoo can deliver on their immense potential and help push the club back towards the top of the table.
