Alexander Zverev eases past Jacob Fearnley to advance to Australian Open fourth round

Second seed Alexander Zverev (27) continued his impressive journey at the Australian Open on Friday, defeating British player Jacob Fearnley (23) in straight sets during the third round.

The German showcased his skills on Margaret Court Arena, overcoming his 92nd-ranked opponent with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in a match lasting two hours and two minutes.

Zverev's next challenge will be against the victor of the all-French match between Ugo Humbert and Arthur Fils, with a spot in the quarter-finals at stake.

This victory marked Zverev's 28th win at the Australian Open, placing him just one win shy of Boris Becker's record for the most victories by a German player.

He expressed admiration for Fearnley, who is competing in only his second Grand Slam event.

"He's an incredible player," Zverev remarked, as he seeks his first major title after a decade of effort.

"He has progressed through all the levels, attended college, competed in the Challenger series, and is now on the main tour, reaching the third round of a Grand Slam.

"I have immense respect for him. He is continually improving."

Zverev aims to surpass his semi-final appearance from the previous year and has been consistent throughout the tournament, having yet to lose a set.

He made his initial breakthrough in the sixth game, capitalizing on a double fault from Fearnley. Following an eight-shot rally, he forced an error that secured the break, allowing him to take the set.

Both players exchanged early breaks in the second set, but another double fault from the Briton provided Zverev with an opportunity, and a poorly executed backhand at the net allowed the German to seize a commanding 5-4 lead.

Although Zverev uncharacteristically surrendered an early break in the third set, he quickly regained focus, applying pressure on Fearnley's serve and establishing a 4-2 advantage before confidently closing out the match.

Zverev enjoyed one of his most successful seasons last year, yet his runner-up finishes at the 2020 US Open and the French Open last year remain his best performances in Grand Slam tournaments to date.
