Algerian Khelif advances in welterweight division as Italy's Carini abandons fight

Imane Khelif, a 25-year-old Algerian boxer, advanced past Angela Carini, a 25-year-old Italian boxer, in their welterweight round of 16 fight. Carini surprisingly abandoned the match after 46 seconds in the first round due to feeling pain in her nose.

Khelif gained attention after being disqualified from a gold medal match at the 2023 World Championships for not meeting the International Boxing Association (IBA) eligibility rules that prohibit athletes with XY chromosomes from competing in women's events. However, she was deemed eligible to compete in Paris, an event organized by the International Olympic Committee.

Entering the crowded North Paris arena to loud cheers from fans waving Algerian flags, Khelif quickly displayed her superior speed and reach compared to Carini, who is six centimeters shorter. After 30 seconds, Carini went to her coach to adjust her headgear, but upon briefly resuming the fight, she returned to her corner, stopped, and left the ring abruptly.

Carini, with tears in her eyes, expressed, "I have always represented my country with loyalty. This time, I couldn't continue the fight. After the second blow, I felt a sharp pain in my nose, and I decided to end the match as I couldn't carry on. It's better to stop when you feel something isn't right."

Despite her emotional state, Carini maintained, "I didn't lose tonight. I fulfilled my duty as a fighter by stepping into the ring and giving my best. I exit with my head held high and a heavy heart."

As she was escorted away, Carini concluded, "I am a mature woman, and the ring is my life. I have always followed my instincts, and knowing when to stop is not giving up; it's showing maturity."

Certain sports organizations have imposed restrictions on the permissible levels of testosterone for athletes participating in women's events, while others exclude individuals who have undergone male puberty entirely.

The International Boxing Association (IBA) is no longer recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the governing body for boxing, following its failure to implement necessary governance and financial reforms, with the IOC now overseeing the sport from Paris.

The IOC has permitted Khelif and Taiwan's double world champion Lin Yu-ting, who lost her bronze medal at the previous World Championships due to not meeting the established criteria, to participate in the upcoming Games.

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed that Carini's match against Khelif was not a contest between equals.

"I believe that athletes possessing male genetic traits should not be allowed to compete in women's events," Meloni stated.

"This is not an act of discrimination, but rather a measure to safeguard the rights of female athletes to compete on a level playing field."

Lin is scheduled to compete against Uzbekistan's Sitora Turdibekova in a featherweight match in Paris on Friday.

When asked if she felt overwhelmed by the ongoing discussions, Carini responded: "I did not. These matters did not hinder or obstruct my mental focus.

"I entered the ring determined to give my utmost effort, irrespective of who was in front of me, as that was not my concern at that moment.

"My goal was to perform at my best. Therefore, regarding all the controversies, I remained uninterested. I simply wanted to win."
