How Alysa Liu became the breakout star of the 2026 Winter Olympics

Alysa Liu has emerged as one of the breakout global stars of the 2026 Winter Olympics, not only for her performances on the ice but also for the massive surge in her social media following after winning Olympic gold.

The 20-year-old American figure skater has gained more than five million new Instagram followers within days of her Olympic triumph, transforming her from a rising athlete into one of the most visible personalities in winter sports.

Before the Olympics began, Liu had fewer than 300,000 followers across social platforms. Just one week after her historic victory, that number had skyrocketed to more than 5.3 million, signaling the powerful global reach of Olympic success.

The rapid growth places Liu among the most influential winter sports athletes online, even surpassing the social media presence of fellow Chinese-American winter sports star Eileen Gu.

Historic Olympic Moment for U.S. Figure Skating

Liu’s surge in popularity followed a landmark achievement for American figure skating. At the Milan Winter Olympics, she captured gold in the women’s singles event, ending a long wait for the United States. Her victory marked the first individual Olympic gold medal for an American woman in figure skating since 2006, restoring Team USA’s prominence in the sport.

Liu also contributed to the United States’ success in the team figure skating event, where the country secured another gold medal during the competition.

Her free skate performance, set to the iconic disco anthem “MacArthur Park Suite” by Donna Summer, captivated audiences with a blend of technical precision and expressive choreography. The routine quickly became one of the defining moments of the Games and helped solidify Liu’s reputation as one of the sport’s most exciting talents.

From Retirement to Olympic Champion

What makes Liu’s Olympic journey even more compelling is the unexpected path she took to reach the top. After competing at the 2022 Winter Olympics, Liu stepped away from competitive skating at just 16 years old, leaving many wondering whether she would ever return to the sport.

Her decision to resume competitive skating years later proved to be a turning point. Now 20, Liu has returned stronger, combining maturity, confidence and artistry on the ice.

Known for her energetic personality and distinctive “halo” hairstyle, Liu has quickly become a fan favorite among Team USA supporters and skating fans worldwide.

Olympic Champion heads to Boston Showcase

Following her Olympic success, Liu will continue her post-Games schedule with appearances across the United States.

She is set to headline the “Ice Chips 2026: A World Tour event hosted by Skating Club of Boston in Norwood, Massachusetts. The showcase takes place on February 28 and March 1 and will feature several elite figure skaters.

The event will include appearances from Olympians such as Maxim Naumov and Aleksandr Selevko, as well as pair skating duo Emily Chan and Spencer Akira Howe. U.S. champions Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov will also participate.

“Ice Chips” holds a unique place in figure skating history as the longest-running club-produced ice show in the world, dating back to 1911. The event highlights a wide range of skating disciplines including singles, pairs, ice dance, synchronized skating and theatrical performances.

Stars on Ice Tour Next Stop

Liu’s Olympic victory has also secured her a headline role in the renowned Stars on Ice tour, one of the most prestigious professional skating tours in North America. The tour begins April 16 and will travel across several U.S. cities, featuring performances from multiple Olympic athletes.

One of the stops will bring Liu back to Boston on April 25, where fans will once again have the opportunity to watch the newly crowned Olympic champion perform live.

A New Face of American Winter Sports

Liu’s rapid rise in both sporting achievement and digital popularity highlights the growing connection between Olympic success and global online audiences. For Team USA, her triumph represents more than just a gold medal. It marks the arrival of a new generation of American figure skating stars capable of captivating both the sport’s traditional fan base and a younger, digitally connected audience.

With millions of new followers and a packed schedule of performances ahead, Liu’s Olympic moment appears to be just the beginning of a much larger global presence.
