Amorim confident Man United can beat any Premier League team despite Arsenal defeat

Despite suffering a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in their Premier League season opener on Sunday, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expressed unwavering confidence in his rebuilt squad's ability to compete with any team in England's top division. The Portuguese coach remained remarkably optimistic following the narrow loss at Old Trafford, pointing to significant improvements from the previous campaign's disastrous 15th-place finish.
Arsenal secured victory through Riccardo Calafiori's early header from a corner kick, capitalizing on a defensive error from Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. However, the manner of United's performance left supporters and their manager with genuine reasons for encouragement as they witnessed a transformed approach from the team that struggled so badly last season.
Amorim's enthusiasm was evident in his post-match assessment, as he highlighted the tactical progress his team had made. "We have players to win any game in the Premier League," said Amorim, flashing a rare smile after the scowl he wore for most of last season. "We were more aggressive than last year. We went one against one all the game and we pressed high. We had quality with the ball."
The Red Devils' summer recruitment appeared to pay immediate dividends, with new signings Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford providing the pace and creativity that had been sorely lacking in previous campaigns. Cunha, in particular, caught the eye with an impressive debut performance that saw him register three shots on target and arguably emerge as the standout player on the pitch.
Amorim praised the impact of his new acquisitions and the team's overall approach throughout the contest. "We did a lot things right," Amorim said. "We were more aggressive and brave. In certain moments I think Bryan and Cunha helped a lot. We stuck to the plan even when the stadium was nervous, we continued to play the way we played and that will help us in the future."
The Portuguese tactician also acknowledged the connection between the team's performance style and the expectations of the Old Trafford faithful, recognizing that entertainment value remained as important as results for the club's supporters. "(The fans) want that feeling again. We go to Old Trafford and we are not going to get bored. We need to win more than last season but they want to see something and feel something."
Manchester United's defensive display showed marked improvement compared to the previous season's struggles, with the backline appearing more organized and composed under pressure. However, the decisive goal highlighted ongoing concerns about the goalkeeping position, as Bayindir's weak challenge on the corner kick proved costly.
The Turkish goalkeeper failed to deal adequately with Arsenal's set piece when William Saliba made contact with him, resulting in Bayindir feebly batting the ball with one hand directly into Calafiori's path for a simple close-range finish. The error raised questions about Amorim's goalkeeping options and whether changes might be necessary in that crucial position.
When addressing the goal and the physical nature of modern set-piece defending, Amorim offered a pragmatic assessment of the incident. "If you can watch the goal, I think (players) are allowed to do a lot of things in the corners. We need to do the same," he said. "But when you touch that way the goalkeeper, he needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not to push players, or he chooses to push players and let the ball past. But again, (it) is the rules. If he's allowed, we need to do the same thing."
Bayindir had been selected ahead of Andre Onana, who was deemed not ready to start after completing only three training sessions following his recovery from injury. While Onana himself had endured a difficult previous season with several notable errors, Amorim appeared unconcerned about making immediate changes to his goalkeeping setup, suggesting patience with his current options.
The performance represented a significant departure from the tepid displays that characterized much of the previous campaign, with United showing greater intensity, pressing higher up the pitch, and demonstrating more courage in their attacking play. The tactical improvements were evident throughout the match, even though the result did not reflect the team's enhanced approach.
