Amorim promises brighter future for Manchester United after disastrous season

Ruben Amorim has delivered a heartfelt message to Manchester United fans, urging unity after a “disastrous” 2024/25 campaign and vowing that “good days are coming.”

Speaking directly to the Old Trafford faithful following United’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa on the final day of the Premier League season, Amorim issued a public apology for what has been the Red Devils’ worst league finish in over 50 years.

Despite Sunday’s morale-boosting victory, which featured goals from Amad Diallo and a farewell penalty by Christian Eriksen, Manchester United closed out the season in 15th place, their lowest top-flight finish since the 1973/74 campaign and the poorest in Premier League history.

Amorim to United Fans: "We stick together and move forward"

“First of all, I want to apologise for this season,” Amorim began in his post-match address to the home crowd. “I know you are really disappointed with me and with the team. I also want to say thank you. We are very grateful for your support, even though it’s been really hard to keep believing.”

Amorim, who took over from Erik ten Hag in November after leaving Sporting Lisbon, acknowledged the emotional toll of the season. United crashed out of the title race early, endured a run of poor results in the league, and suffered heartbreak in the UEFA Europa League final just days earlier, losing to Tottenham Hotspur.

“Now we have to make a choice,” he continued. “Do we stay stuck in the past? Or do we stick together and move forward? This season is behind us. It’s over.”

Vows of a strong comeback in 2025/26

Reflecting on his early days in charge, Amorim reminded fans of a warning he issued after his opening matches in charge.

Six months ago, with two wins and a draw in my first three games, I said to you all: the storm is coming,” Amorim recalled. “Now, after this disastrous season, I tell you—the good days are coming. If there is one club that can rise again from any disaster, it’s Manchester United Football Club.”

He also took a moment to address his squad: “To my players—I want to apologise. I may not have always been fair, but I have always tried to be honest. Thank you. See you next season.”

Final Day Highlights: Eriksen bows out with Goal

In what was an emotional final appearance for Christian Eriksen, the Danish midfielder signed off with a composed penalty finish. Amad Diallo opened the scoring, helping United end a run of poor form in the league—their last win had come in March against Leicester City.

United set for Asia Tour

Following the season finale, Manchester United confirmed a 32-man squad will travel to Asia for a post-season tour. The team will face ASEAN All Stars in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, May 28, followed by a clash against the Hong Kong national team at Hong Kong Stadium on Friday, May 30.

The tour aims to boost squad morale and global fan engagement ahead of what promises to be a critical rebuilding summer for the club.
