Andretti racing team sign up Symonds to strengthen F1 push

The Andretti Global motor racing team has enlisted the services of former Renault and Williams Formula One chief technical officer, Pat Symonds (70), as part of their ongoing efforts to enter the world of F1.

Pat Symonds, who hails from England and has been serving as the chief technical officer for F1 itself since 2017, will assume the role of executive engineering consultant at Andretti.

"We are extremely thrilled to welcome Pat to the Andretti family," expressed Michael Andretti, Chairman & CEO of Andretti Global.

"Pat's extensive knowledge in aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, and Formula 1 power units will play a crucial role as we strive to build a competitive team.

"I firmly believe that his expertise has played a significant role in shaping the narrative of Formula 1, and his decision to join our endeavor speaks volumes. I am genuinely delighted with this next step as we continue to make progress," he added.

Upon the completion of his notice period at Formula 1 Management, Symonds will officially join the team at their new base of operations in Silverstone.

In January, F1 rejected Andretti's bid to join the sport, citing concerns regarding competitiveness.

Andretti, led by 1978 world champion Mario Andretti and his son, former McLaren driver Michael Andretti, had applied to become the 11th team in Formula 1 starting from either 2025 or 2026.

However, the possibility of admission from 2028 remains open, as Andretti's partner, General Motors (GM), plans to develop its own engine by then.

Andretti Global serves as the parent company for Andretti Autosport and other ventures, with teams currently participating in seven series worldwide.

Their most notable presence is in the IndyCar Series, where the team fields four cars.

Since Michael Andretti's involvement, the team has secured victory in the Indianapolis 500 on five occasions (2005, 2007, 2014, 2016, 2017) and has clinched the overall championship four times (2004, 2005, 2007, 2012).
