Andy Murray beats Matteo Berrettini in Miami opening round

Andy Murray, a two-time winner of the Miami Open, staged a comeback to secure a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against the Italian player Matteo Berrettini, who was facing difficulties, during Wednesday's match.

Berrettini required medical attention towards the conclusion of the second set after displaying signs of nearly fainting on the court, yet he persevered.

The Italian recently made a comeback to the tour following a year plagued by injuries in 2023, and he managed to reach the final of a Challenger event in Phoenix.

In the initial game of the match, he managed to break Murray's serve and maintained a strong grip on the opening set.

However, he experienced a significant decline in performance during the second set and decided to take a medical time-out when he was trailing 5-2, as he appeared disoriented while leaving the court.

The weather in Miami was not excessively hot or humid, and it was actually quite pleasant and mild compared to previous years' tournaments.

The 27-year-old former world number six displayed a stronger resistance in the third set, but Murray, who seemed composed and steady, ultimately secured victory after two hours and 47 minutes.

Murray, a two-time champion of the Miami Open in 2009 and 2013, will face the 29th-seeded Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the upcoming round.
