Andy Murray hints at retirement after beating Denis Shapovalov in Dubai

Andy Murray, aged 36, hinted at the possibility of retiring in the upcoming "few months" following his victorious opening match in Dubai on Monday.

Andy Murray, the former world number one, fought back from a set down to defeat Denis Shapovalov (24) 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.

Murray, who ended a six-match losing streak in Doha last week but was eliminated by Czech teenager Jakub Mensik, mentioned to the BBC in December that 2024 might be his last year on the ATP Tour.

Acknowledging his limited time left, Murray stated, "I probably don't have too long left but I'll do as best as I can these last few months."

Despite the challenges of aging in the sport, Murray expressed his love for competition and the game, emphasizing the increasing difficulty of keeping up with younger players and maintaining physical fitness.

Following his defeat to Mensik, Murray seemed to express doubts about his future in the game to his player's box, but he clarified that his comments were not definitive.

Murray recently achieved his 500th win on hard courts, a milestone shared by tennis greats like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andre Agassi, and Rafael Nadal.

Reflecting on his achievement, Murray commented, "Yeah, it's not bad (500 hard-court wins). Hard courts have been a great surface for me over the years... I'm very proud of that."

Struggling against Shapovalov's strong performance in the first set, Murray managed to secure a second-set tie-break victory before dominating the final set with a double-break.

In the next round, Murray will face either Gael Monfils or Ugo Humbert, both experienced players. Murray has not advanced to the quarter-finals of an ATP event since his defeat to Daniil Medvedev in Qatar over a year ago.

On Monday, Murray dropped to 67th place in the ATP rankings, marking a decline of 17 spots.
