Andy Murray opens Indian Wells campaign with straight sets victory over David Goffin

Andy Murray, aged 36, commenced his 16th participation in the ATP-WTA Indian Wells Masters on Wednesday by securing a convincing victory of 6-3, 6-2 against qualifier David Goffin, aged 33.
Andy Murray, a former three-time Grand Slam champion, secured a convincing victory against the former top-10 Belgian in the California desert in 2009. The match lasted 80 minutes, with Murray improving his record to 8-0 against his opponent.
The 36-year-old British player expressed satisfaction with his performance, highlighting his strong play from the back of the court.
Murray, who is currently ranked 61st, mentioned that his serving was particularly impressive during this match, stating that it might be the best he has ever served at this venue.
Despite his past struggles at the desert venue, Murray felt more comfortable this year due to the quicker balls and slightly smaller court dimensions.
Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion, received a first-round bye and will soon discover the identity of his first opponent. Matteo Arnaldi of Italy secured his place in the next round by defeating Frenchman Luca van Assche in a thrilling match that ended with a score of 7-6, 7-6.
Jannik Sinner, the Australian Open winner, continued his winning streak by clinching the title in Rotterdam last month. He will commence his tournament against Thanasi Kokkinakis, who emerged victorious against Marcus Giron with a score of 6-3, 7-5.
Unfortunately, Paula Badosa, the 2021 tournament champion, faced another setback due to a back injury. As a result, she had to withdraw from her opening match against Ashlyn Krueger, who received a wild card entry.
Nadia Podoroska, a lucky loser, will replace the 73rd-ranked Badosa in the tournament. Badosa had been absent from competition since Wimbledon last season due to her injury.
Angelique Kerber, a tennis mother and finalist from five years ago, secured a spot in the second round. The 36-year-old German, who has three major titles to her name, defeated Petra Martic with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Kerber will now face Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 Roland Garros champion.
Katie Boulter, the British player who recently won the WTA 500 San Diego title, suffered an early exit in the first round. She was defeated by Italian Camila Giorgi with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
