Angola 2-0 Burkina Faso: Angola see off Burkina Faso to top Group D

Angola, who have reached the quarter-finals twice before, achieved a historic milestone by finishing at the top of their group in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time ever. Their impressive 2-0 win against Burkina Faso in Yamoussoukro not only secured their position but also extended their unbeaten streak to nine consecutive games across all competitions.

With only two points separating the top three teams and each side having four points before the match, the opportunity for bragging rights in Group D was wide open.

However, the game started off dull with neither team creating any real chances early on. It wasn't until midway through the first half that Issa Kabore missed a fantastic opportunity for Burkina Faso, sending his shot over the crossbar after receiving a perfect pass inside the box.

The Stallions were soon punished for their defensive lapse as Mabululu scored an easy header from a free kick delivery, giving Angola the lead.

Angola managed to hold onto their lead comfortably going into halftime, but Burkina Faso, a team that had only lost once in their previous eight matches, still had hope for a comeback in the second half.

Despite showcasing patience and team chemistry, Burkina Faso struggled to make an impact in the final third as Angola's defense remained composed. The Burkinabe, who had scored in 16 consecutive games before this match, were expected to raise the stakes, especially considering their recent performances in AFCON finals matches.

However, Angola, confident in their abilities, secured back-to-back victories for the first time since November 2022. Zini added to their tally in stoppage time, sealing the win with a point-blank rebound.

Although Burkina Faso finished second in Group D, they will aim to bounce back in the knockout stages. On the other hand, Angola can look forward to the next stage after their successful AFCON group stage campaign.
