Anna Kalinskaya shocks Iga Swiatek in Dubai to book final with Jasmine Paolini

In a remarkable display of skill, Anna Kalinskaya (25), a Russian qualifier, extended her impressive winning streak at the Dubai Tennis Championships. She caused a major upset by defeating the world's top-ranked player, Iga Swiatek (22), with a score of 6-4, 6-4 on Friday. This victory propels her into the final and brings her one step closer to securing her first-ever tour-level title.

Jasmine Paolini, an unseeded player, will be standing in Kalinskaya's path on Saturday. In the other semi-final on Centre Court, Paolini displayed great resilience by saving six set points against Romanian Sorana Cirstea, ultimately winning the match 6-2, 7-6(6).

Kalinskaya, who reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, faced a tough challenge as she was down a break and trailing 4-2. However, she fought back and capitalized on Swiatek's errors with her relentless hitting, securing the first set in less than an hour.

Continuing her strong performance, the Russian broke early in the second set as Swiatek struggled to find her rhythm, committing more mistakes.

Swiatek's frustration was evident as she threw her racket to the floor. Kalinskaya took advantage of the situation, going up 2-0, and managed to withstand late pressure to secure the victory, ending Swiatek's seven-match winning streak as the Doha champion.

Kalinskaya acknowledged Paolini's skills, recognizing the need to stay calm and aggressive in order to compete against her.

She expressed her satisfaction with the win and praised her opponent's abilities, anticipating more encounters in the future.

Paolini advanced to the semi-finals when fourth seed Elena Rybakina withdrew from their quarter-final match due to illness. The Italian, ranked 26th, quickly took the first set against Cirstea in just 40 minutes.

In the second set, both players exchanged breaks as Cirstea managed to level the score at 5-5 after saving a match point with a powerful backhand shot.

Despite briefly taking the lead, Cirstea faltered in the 12th game, missing multiple opportunities to force a decider and was pushed into a tiebreak.

Paolini refused to be defeated, as she successfully saved yet another set point to emerge victorious.

"I added a touch of suspense towards the end of the match. I was feeling a bit anxious," stated Paolini, who will enter the top 20 rankings on Monday.

"She's an exceptional player, she began hitting incredible winners. I was concerned because she made an impressive comeback yesterday. I'm truly delighted that I was able to secure the win in the tiebreak."
