Anthony Davis, Lakers extend Spurs' losing streak to 18 games

The Los Angeles Lakers defeated San Antonio and Victor Wembanyama 122-119 on Wednesday night, thanks to 37 points and 10 rebounds from Anthony Davis. This extended the Spurs' franchise-record losing streak to 18 games.
San Antonio's rookie Wembanyama had a great performance, recording 30 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocks. This makes him the first rookie since Tim Duncan in 1998 to achieve such a stat line with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocks in a single game. Despite his remarkable individual effort, Wembanyama emphasized that winning would make their performance even more satisfying.
LeBron James, a key player for the Lakers, was absent due to a calf injury. However, the Lakers did not lose hope as Davis stepped up and refused to leave the court, determined to give his team a chance to win. Davis understood the impact of his presence both defensively and offensively.
The Spurs came close to defeating the reigning NBA In-Season Tournament champions, the Lakers. With a strong fourth-quarter performance, San Antonio outscored Los Angeles by 15 points. Wembanyama played a crucial role in the comeback, hitting a 3-pointer over Davis and making crucial free throws.
However, Wembanyama fouled out for the first time in his career, impeding the Spurs' chances of completing the comeback. Despite the loss, Wembanyama highlighted the importance of playing hard and smart, emphasizing the need for defensive stops.
The Spurs had other notable contributors, with Keldon Johnson scoring 28 points and Malaki Branham adding 16 to their tally.
Taurean Prince contributed 17 points to secure the Lakers' fifth victory in six games. Austin Reaves also made a significant impact with 15 points, while D'Angelo Russell showcased his skills with 12 points and 10 assists.
Ham acknowledged that once the momentum shifted in their favor, the Lakers carried it through until the end. Despite facing challenges, they persevered and achieved the desired outcome. However, they recognize the need for improvement in certain areas and are committed to making progress.
During the Lakers' opening possession, Davis unfortunately rolled his left ankle while attempting a layup against Wembanyama. He experienced pain and was attended to by the team during a timeout. Davis utilized the break to stretch and warm up his injury.
In the first half, Davis displayed an impressive performance, scoring 24 points on 10 out of 15 field goal attempts. Notably, he showcased his dominance by overpowering Wembanyama under the rim and executing a powerful one-handed dunk with just under four minutes remaining.
San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich expressed disappointment with his team's performance in the first half, describing it as sloppy and lacking execution. However, he was pleased with their improved competitiveness and execution in the second half, hoping to carry that momentum into their upcoming game on Friday.
Wembanyama managed to get some revenge in the final minute of the first half, evading Davis under the rim and delivering a one-handed slam. The French rookie, who was the first overall pick, showcased his defensive skills with two blocks and added two dunks within the last 45 seconds of the half.
