Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital and declared clinically fit to continue his recovery at home following a tragic road accident in Ogun State.

The update was confirmed in a joint statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lagos State, Gbenga Omotoso, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Ogun State, Kayode Akinmade.

Joshua ‘Heavy-Hearted’ after loss of close friends

According to the statement, Joshua is said to be “heavy-hearted and full of emotions” following the deaths of two of his close friends, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who lost their lives in the crash.

The governments of Lagos and Ogun states once again commiserate with the families of the two young men who tragically lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua on December 29, 2025,” the statement read.

The statement added that Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday to pay their final respects as preparations were made for the repatriation of the deceased.

Governors, President offer support

Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State expressed appreciation for the public’s concern and support following the incident. The statement also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu for his assistance throughout the process.

Medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, where Joshua received treatment, were also commended for their efforts in attending to the former boxer and other injured occupants.

Details of the accident

The accident occurred around 11:00 am on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the Makun area of Ogun State. An SUV conveying Joshua reportedly collided with a stationary truck parked on the extreme shoulder of the road.

Footage circulating online showed the 35-year-old being rescued from the wreckage, appearing visibly injured.

FRSC attributes crash to overspeeding

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, attributed the accident to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking.

FRSC Public Relations Officer Afolabi Oyewole explained that the driver was travelling at high speed before attempting an illegal overtaking manoeuvre.

What happened was that the driver involved in the accident was on a very high speed. He wrongfully overtook and hit a stationary vehicle parked on the extreme shoulder of the road,” Oyewole said.

He added that the impact made it impossible for all occupants to escape unhurt, noting that it was only fortunate that the point of collision was on the right-hand side of the vehicle.

Rescue and Medical Response

Oyewole confirmed that Anthony Joshua and the driver survived the crash and were immediately evacuated by Department of State Services (DSS) operatives attached to the boxer and taken to hospital for treatment.

Joshua has since been discharged and is expected to continue recuperating privately.
