Arne Slot lauds Mohamed Salah as 'special' following brace against Newcastle

Arne Slot (46) expressed admiration for the "special" Mohamed Salah (32) following the Liverpool forward's impressive performance, which included two goals in the exhilarating 3-3 draw against Newcastle on Wednesday.
Liverpool's seven-match winning run across all competitions came to an abrupt end as a last-minute blunder allowed Newcastle to snatch a dramatic 3-3 draw at Anfield. Fabian Schar capitalized on a misjudgment by goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to equalize in the 90th minute, denying Liverpool a vital victory.
Despite seeing their lead at the top of the Premier League reduced to seven points, Liverpool remains well-positioned to claim their first league title since 2020. Much of their success this season can be attributed to the sensational form of Mohamed Salah.
The Egyptian forward has been in blistering form, scoring 15 goals across all competitions this season, including nine in his last seven league outings. However, Salah’s future at Anfield remains uncertain, with speculation swirling about a potential big-money move to Saudi Arabia as his contract edges toward its expiration at the season's end.
Salah himself has hinted at uncertainty, recently suggesting he feels "more out than in" at Liverpool. While manager Arne Slot refrained from making a direct plea for Salah to stay, he highlighted the forward’s transformative impact on the team during his first season in charge.
"It’s hard to predict the future, but right now, he’s in an incredible place," Slot stated. "He’s part of a fantastic team that provides him the platform to deliver extraordinary performances. Even on a day when he’s not at his absolute best, he’s capable of assisting, scoring twice, hitting the bar, and being a constant threat. That’s the mark of a truly special player."
The match saw Newcastle take a first-half lead through Alexander Isak, whose stunning strike in the 35th minute left Liverpool trailing at the break. Salah stepped up in the second half, assisting Curtis Jones for Liverpool’s equalizer five minutes after the restart.
However, Newcastle responded swiftly, regaining the lead in the 62nd minute through Anthony Gordon. Salah once again proved his value, leveling the score with a well-taken goal in the 68th minute before firing Liverpool ahead with just seven minutes left on the clock.
The stage seemed set for another memorable Liverpool victory until Kelleher misjudged a late Newcastle attack, allowing Schar to score and break Liverpool hearts.
Slot offered support for his goalkeeper despite the mistake. "Isak’s goal was unstoppable, and Caoimhin has been fantastic for us," he said. "But unfortunately, he misread the final situation, which proved costly."
While the draw represents a setback for Liverpool, the performance of Salah continues to be a shining light in their quest for silverware. As discussions about his future persist, fans will hope that his brilliance remains at the heart of Liverpool’s title charge.
