Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea: Gunners edge Blues in tight London derby to end winless run

Arsenal secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Chelsea in their Premier League clash on Sunday, ending a three-game winless streak and keeping their slim title hopes alive. A first-half header from stand-in striker Mikel Merino proved decisive in a tense London derby at Stamford Bridge.

Merino broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, expertly flicking a looping header past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez following a well-delivered corner from Martin Ødegaard. The Spanish midfielder, who has stepped up in attack amid Arsenal’s injury woes, nearly doubled his tally in the 60th minute, but his side-footed volley was brilliantly saved by Sanchez.

Reflecting on the hard-fought win, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told the BBC: "It was a big game and we wanted to win against a top team. We did enough to deserve to win the game. Now we have the international break so let's take a chance to breathe and bring some players back hopefully."

Chelsea, missing key attacking threats with both Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson sidelined through injury, struggled to create clear-cut chances. Their best opportunity came in the 37th minute when defender Marc Cucurella unleashed a powerful volley that slipped through Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya’s hands but rolled just wide.

With the victory, Arsenal remain second in the Premier League, trailing leaders Liverpool by 12 points. Both teams have played 29 matches, with nine rounds remaining in the season. Meanwhile, Chelsea sit fourth, holding a one-point lead over Manchester City and trailing third-placed Nottingham Forest by five.

Midfielder Moisés Caicedo emphasized Chelsea’s ambitions despite the setback, telling Sky Sports: "We want to play Champions League football next season. The teams are close but we are just focused on ourselves because that is the most important thing. Champions League football is our target."
