Arsenal 1-0 Ipswich Town: Havertz on target as Gunners defeat Tractor Boys to close in on league leaders

Arsenal ascended to second place in the Premier League standings following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town, courtesy of Kai Havertz's first-half goal. This marks the Gunners' 14th consecutive home match without defeat this season, comprising 11 wins and 3 draws.

In their first league encounter since 2002, Arsenal began the match with a slight advantage, as Jurriën Timber's low shot was expertly saved by Ipswich's Arijanet Muric.

The Gunners maintained their offensive pressure, which culminated in a breakthrough in the 23rd minute. Leandro Trossard delivered a precise cross that Havertz converted from close range, marking his 12th goal of the season.

With momentum on their side, Arsenal sought a quick second goal; however, Gabriel Jesus, making his third consecutive start since December 2023, had an angled shot disallowed for offside.

This opportunity represented Arsenal's best chance to extend their lead during a cautious first half, as Ipswich's defense held firm, limiting the hosts to a single-goal advantage at halftime.

The second half began similarly, with Arsenal missing a prime opportunity to increase their lead when Gabriel headed a free kick wide from six yards out.

As the match approached the final 20 minutes, Arsenal intensified their search for a crucial second goal, but Muric thwarted efforts from Martin Ødegaard and Mikel Merino in quick succession.

Despite Ipswich having secured two victories in their last three away league matches, they struggled to threaten the hosts in the closing moments, allowing Arsenal to comfortably secure three vital points, even in the absence of their key player, Bukayo Saka.

This victory extends Arsenal's impressive unbeaten streak against newly-promoted teams to 42 matches (37 wins and 5 draws), while Ipswich faces their fifth defeat in six Premier League outings.
