Arsenal 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk: Arsenal secure hard-fought victory against Shakhtar Donetsk in Champions League

Arsenal navigated a challenging encounter to secure a 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk, thereby extending their unbeaten home record in UEFA Champions League group stage matches to ten (W9, D1).

Eager to recover from a disappointing loss to Bournemouth on Saturday, Mikel Arteta’s team established dominance early in the match, with Riccardo Calafiori and Leandro Trossard both failing to convert promising opportunities.

The home side continued to search for a breakthrough, which came in the 29th minute when Gabriel Martinelli’s low shot struck the post and deflected into the net due to an unfortunate touch from Shakhtar goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk.

As the first half progressed, Arsenal maintained their attacking momentum, and only a remarkable last-minute defensive effort from Mykola Matviyenko prevented Kai Havertz from scoring a straightforward tap-in.

Gabriel Jesus also came close to extending Arsenal’s lead before halftime, but his weak attempt was blocked by Riznyk.

The Gunners' struggles in front of goal persisted at the beginning of the second half, with Trossard heading wastefully wide and Martinelli having a powerful shot saved by Riznyk.

These missed chances instilled a sense of hope in the visitors as the match approached its final stages. However, Arsenal was presented with a significant opportunity to secure the win when Valeriy Bondar was penalized for handball in the area.

Trossard stepped up to take the penalty, but Riznyk once again came to Shakhtar’s aid, making a crucial save.

This set the stage for a thrilling conclusion, with the visitors nearly equalizing in stoppage time, only for David Raya to produce a brilliant save from Pedrinho’s sharp effort, ensuring a narrow but vital victory for the Gunners.
