Arsenal 1-1 Brentford: Gunners stumble in Premier League title race with Brentford draw

Arsenal were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Brentford at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, a result that significantly boosts Liverpool’s chances of clinching the Premier League title. Yoane Wissa’s clinical 74th-minute equaliser cancelled out Thomas Partey’s opener, leaving Arsenal trailing the league leaders by 10 points with a game more played.
The Gunners struggled to replicate the energy and precision of their impressive 3-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over Real Madrid earlier in the week. Despite dominating possession, they found it difficult to break down a resilient Brentford defence.
Thomas Partey finally broke the deadlock just past the hour, slotting home after a brilliant counter-attacking run from Declan Rice, who had starred with two goals in the midweek European clash. However, Wissa responded with a clever hooked finish from close range, capitalizing on a rare lapse in Arsenal’s set-piece defending.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta voiced his frustration after the match, telling Sky Sports: "We are disappointed with the result. We had full control of the game and conceded a very poor goal. It was not good enough and when you don't do what you have to do against this team, you concede a goal."
Arteta made several changes to the starting lineup with the return leg in Madrid in mind, indicating a shift in focus toward European success given Liverpool’s commanding domestic lead. A disallowed goal from Kieran Tierney – ruled offside via semi-automated VAR technology – summed up a frustrating afternoon for the home side.
Brentford, meanwhile, showed composure and tactical discipline throughout. Kristoffer Ajer came closest for the visitors in the first half but was denied by a sharp David Raya save. The Bees’ point lifts them to 11th in the table.
Reflecting on the result, Brentford manager Thomas Frank said: "Of course, it is a very good point against a very good Arsenal team that beat Real Madrid four days ago. Fighting back to get to 1-1 shows the character in our team. I would have loved us to create more but they also defended very well."
Arsenal’s draw marks another instance of dropped points from a winning position – their 16th of the season – a figure that has seriously dented their title ambitions.
