Arsenal 2-0 Luton Town: Martin Odegaard on target as Gunners reclaim top spot

Arsenal secured a comfortable 2-0 win against Luton Town, further strengthening their bid for the Premier League title, which they last won in 2004. This victory also extended their unbeaten record of 39 home league games against newly-promoted teams.

Despite making five changes to the team that drew against Manchester City, expectations were still high for Mikel Arteta's Gunners. However, these alterations had little impact on the team's performance, as they maintained their rhythm and dominated possession from the start.

Luton Town defended admirably, with Ross Barkley and Alfie Doughty blocking shots from Kai Havertz and Oleksandr Zinchenko respectively.

Although Luton Town made some attempts to push forward, they failed to truly test Arsenal's goalkeeper, David Raya. On the other hand, Emile Smith Rowe's shot bounced towards Thomas Kaminski, but it didn't trouble the Luton goalkeeper either.

Finally, Arsenal broke the deadlock after 24 minutes. Smith Rowe swiftly dispossessed Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, allowing Martin Ødegaard to combine with Havertz and clinically finish the move. This goal marked Ødegaard's 10th goal across all competitions this season.

Fred Onyedinma failed to take advantage of a miscommunication between Gabriel Magalhães and Zinchenko at the opposite end. However, Doughty emerged unharmed from a scare as his tackle caused the ball to rebound off Thomas Partey and go behind.

Despite this, the hosts managed to double their lead before halftime when Daiki Hashioka unintentionally scored an own goal from Smith Rowe's cutback.

With the additional goal, Arsenal were content to maintain possession and be patient after the restart. Rob Edwards then introduced Tahith Chong before the 60-minute mark in an effort to provide a greater attacking threat.

Although the winger was involved in some impressive link-up play, his delivery into the box was intercepted by Zinchenko. The Hatters continued to struggle in finding Carlton Morris in a dangerous position, despite showing promise at times.

Gabriel made a solid block to deny Hashioka, ensuring there was no late uncertainty about Arsenal securing the victory. This win extends their unbeaten streak in the Premier League to 10 games, placing them at the top of the table ahead of Liverpool's match against Sheffield United.

Furthermore, Arsenal ended Luton's league-high record of scoring in 18 consecutive matches. This result leaves the Hatters without a win in their last 10 league games and three points behind Nottingham Forest, who are currently in 17th place.
