Arsenal 2-0 Manchester United: Gunners rely on corner prowess to defeat Red Devils and close in on Liverpool

Arsenal celebrated their 500th match at the Emirates Stadium with a 2-0 victory over their rivals, Manchester United, achieving a remarkable fourth consecutive league win against the Red Devils for the first time in history.

After a commanding 4-0 victory at home against Everton, Ruben Amorim made the unexpected decision to implement six changes to his starting lineup against an Arsenal team eager for their fourth straight win.

Mikel Arteta's squad nearly found the net within the first four minutes when a poor clearance from Andre Onana allowed Gabriel Martinelli to score, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Thomas Partey then squandered a prime opportunity, failing to connect properly with a header from a corner.

As the match progressed, United began to assert themselves, managing to frustrate the home side with periods of controlled possession, yet they posed no real threat to David Raya in the Arsenal goal, failing to register a touch inside the home team's penalty area during the first 30 minutes.

The Gunners continued to apply pressure, with their most significant threat arising from set pieces. Martinelli came close to scoring again, shooting just over the bar after seizing on a loose ball in the box.

The second half saw Arsenal emerge with renewed vigor, and their persistent threat from set pieces ultimately led to the opening goal within ten minutes of the restart.

Declan Rice's corner was deftly flicked in by Jurrien Timber at the front post, marking the 21st goal the Gunners have scored from a corner since the previous season.

In response, Amorim made a triple substitution, including the introduction of Leny Yoro, who was making his competitive debut for Manchester United.

Arsenal's set-piece training was evidently effective, as another corner nearly resulted in a goal, but Manuel Ugarte managed to clear the ball off the line after Joshua Zirkzee almost directed it into his own net.

It was not until the 67th minute that United managed their first shot on target, with Raya executing a superb outstretched save to deny Matthijs de Ligt.

Arsenal effectively neutralized any threats posed by United and extended their advantage following another set-piece situation. Bukayo Saka's corner was directed to the far post, where Partey headed it back into the penalty area, ultimately resulting in a goal credited to William Saliba.

Although Kai Havertz missed an opportunity to secure a third goal when he was played through, Arsenal managed to navigate the final fifteen minutes with minimal challenge from Amorim's side, marking the Portuguese coach's first loss in charge of United.

He will have a chance to amend this setback soon, as United is set to host Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

In the meantime, Arsenal is narrowing the gap to league leaders Liverpool, reducing it to seven points, while their unbeaten streak at home extends to 13 matches across all competitions (11 wins, 2 draws).
