Arsenal 2-1 Fulham: Saka scores on comeback as Gunners hold off Cottagers

Arsenal narrowed the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool with a 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium against Fulham, extending their unbeaten home league record against the Cottagers to 32 matches (25 wins, 7 draws).

To maintain their hopes of securing their first Premier League title in over twenty years, Arsenal could not afford any further mistakes as they aimed to close a 12-point deficit to Liverpool before the match began. The Gunners demonstrated their determination from the outset.

After an initial period of play, the home team began to assert their dominance, with Gabriel Martinelli showcasing his speed as he sprinted down the left flank. However, Thomas Partey sent his cutback high and wide.

Mikel Arteta’s squad faced a setback at the 15-minute mark when Gabriel Magalhaes had to leave the field due to a suspected hamstring injury.

Fortunately, the disappointment surrounding Gabriel's injury was quickly alleviated when Bukayo Saka emerged from the bench to warm up, marking his return to the matchday squad for the first time since his injury in December.

As the match seemed to lose intensity with a lack of quality, the hosts managed to break the deadlock just before halftime, thanks to their makeshift striker, Mikel Merino.

Ethan Nwaneri was released down the right side and found the Spaniard, who took a touch before unleashing a deflected shot into the far corner, leaving Bernd Leno wrong-footed.

Fulham faced difficulties in the first half, as Marco Silva’s team was unable to produce a single shot on target.

Arsenal resumed the match in the second half with the same strategy as the first, focusing on the wings. Martinelli set up Martin Odegaard, but the captain's attempt went high and wide.

Within ten minutes of the restart, Silva’s side finally tested David Raya, but Raul Jimenez’s effort was deflected away by the goalkeeper.

Jurriën Timber then came close to scoring after executing a clever one-two with Ødegaard, but his shot was saved at the near post by Leno.

The home crowd erupted around the hour mark when Saka made his first appearance of the year.

Saka quickly made his presence felt by extending Arsenal’s lead. Merino delivered a cross into the box that Martinelli flicked to the far post, allowing Saka to head it in unopposed.

In an effort to respond, Silva made substitutions, and Rodrigo Muniz nearly made a significant impact as well, but the Brazilian somehow missed the target with a header from just six yards out.

Ultimately, Arsenal managed to navigate the closing minutes without significant difficulty, securing their first head-to-head victory in four encounters and achieving their 18th clean sheet of the season across all competitions.

After their elimination from the FA Cup over the weekend, Fulham's primary objective is to secure a spot in European competition, as they currently trail sixth-placed Newcastle United by two points.
