Arsenal 3-1 Southampton: Saka Shines as Gunners Secure Hard-Fought Victory

Bukayo Saka starred in the win, contributing two assists and scoring a late goal as the Gunners overturned an early second-half deficit.

Southampton had briefly led through Cameron Archer’s strike, but quick responses from Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Saka sealed a crucial win for Arsenal. The result keeps the Gunners just one point behind league leaders Liverpool heading into the international break, while Southampton remains winless and stuck in the relegation zone.

Arsenal dominated early proceedings, pinning Southampton deep into their own half with a barrage of attacks. Set pieces were particularly threatening, and Kai Havertz missed an early header from close range in the 12th minute.

Despite their territorial advantage, Arsenal struggled to break down Southampton’s defense, which held firm under pressure. The Saints, however, barely troubled former Gunners goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the first half, with their only effort on target coming from Kyle Walker-Peters.

Jorginho nearly broke the deadlock for Arsenal with a long-range shot that narrowly missed the post, while Raheem Sterling and Thomas Partey also saw their efforts thwarted by Southampton’s resilient defense.

The second half brought a surprise as Southampton almost took the lead early on, with 18-year-old Tyler Dibling leading a counterattack that nearly resulted in a goal for Mateus Fernandes. Moments later, Southampton's persistence paid off when Fernandes set up Archer, who fired a composed shot past Ramsdale to give the visitors a shock 1-0 lead.

Arsenal quickly responded, however, as Saka set up Havertz for the equalizer, with the German striking powerfully past Ramsdale. A series of changes gave the Gunners fresh energy, and soon they took the lead through Gabriel Martinelli, who poked home a clever cross from Saka.

Southampton came close to equalizing with Dibling hitting the post, but Arsenal's defense held firm. Any hope of a comeback for the Saints was extinguished when Saka capitalized on a defensive error to score Arsenal’s third in the 88th minute, securing all three points.
