Arsenal 4-0 Atletico Madrid: Gyokeres and Martinelli star as Gunners blow Simeone’s side away

Arsenal sent a message to the rest of Europe with a ruthless 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Emirates, led by Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Martinelli in a stunning second-half blitz that left Diego Simeone speechless.

The Gunners scored four goals in just 13 minutes after halftime, including three inside six minutes, to maintain their perfect start in the Champions League. For Simeone, whose teams are rarely dismantled this easily, it was a night to forget. For Arsenal, it was a statement.

Gyokeres ends drought in style

All eyes were on Viktor Gyokeres, who came into the game without a goal in over 600 minutes of football. The Swedish striker hadn’t been short of effort, but patience was beginning to run thin among some Arsenal supporters.

He couldn’t have picked a better moment to silence the noise. Gyokeres struck twice in quick succession, his first goals in seven games, to complete a sensational second-half performance from Mikel Arteta’s side. They might not have been the most elegant finishes, but they mattered deeply.

And when Gyokeres bundled home his second, just three minutes after the first, the Emirates crowd erupted with chants of “Diego, what’s the score?” aimed squarely at the usually animated Simeone, who stood frozen on the touchline.

Arsenal hit Atletico with four in 13 Minutes

After a cagey first half where Bukayo Saka’s effort was the only real test for Jan Oblak, Arsenal exploded into life after the break.

Gabriel Magalhães opened the scoring with a powerful header from Declan Rice’s pinpoint free-kick, a moment that broke Atletico’s defensive shape. Within moments, Arsenal were rampant.

Gabriel Martinelli, starting only his second match since late September, made it 2-0 with a crisp left-foot finish after Myles Lewis-Skelly’s electric run and cutback. The move was classic Arsenal: fast, fluid, and full of intent.

Gyokeres then joined the party. First, he poked home Martinelli’s cross via a deflection off David Hancko, and minutes later, he used his hip to guide in Arsenal’s fourth following another clever set-piece from Rice.

Four goals in 13 minutes. The Emirates roared as if it was a title decider. Atletico, normally so composed under pressure, simply imploded.

Simeone silenced

Diego Simeone is rarely still on the touchline. He usually prowls, gesticulates, and yells until the final whistle. But as Arsenal’s fourth goal hit the net, the Argentine stood motionless, hands in pockets, eyes fixed on the pitch in disbelief.

Only 24 hours earlier, reports had emerged that Atletico’s players couldn’t shower after training at the Emirates due to a hot water issue. On matchday, it was Arsenal who turned up the heat.

Simeone’s men had no answers. For the final 20 minutes, even the famously fiery coach seemed out of ideas. His team, once known for defensive discipline, looked completely shattered.

Arsenal’s Confidence Growing

Mikel Arteta will be delighted not just with the goals but with the control and intensity his side showed. Arsenal have now won three straight Champions League games, keeping nine clean sheets in their last 12 matches across all competitions.

Declan Rice continues to be a force at both ends, providing the assist for the opener and the corner that led to the fourth goal. David Raya, meanwhile, had a nervy moment early in the second half when caught off his line, but Atletico failed to punish him.

As for Martinelli, this performance was a reminder of his importance. After injuries and inconsistency, the Brazilian looked back to his confident, fearless best.

Arsenal send a message to Europe

This was more than just another group stage win. It was a declaration. Arsenal are not just competing in the Champions League, they’re chasing it.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Real Madrid, all have been put on notice. Arteta’s team are blending defensive solidity with attacking flair, and with players like Gyokeres rediscovering form, they look capable of going deep in the competition.

The Emirates hasn’t seen a European night like this in years. Four goals, a clean sheet, and a manager’s statement win. Arsenal’s Champions League charge is alive and unstoppable.
