Arsenal 5-1 Manchester City: Gunners crush Cityzens to reignite Premier League title race

Arsenal sent a powerful message in the Premier League title race with a dominant 5-1 victory over reigning champions Manchester City, cutting the gap at the top to six points on Sunday.

Martin Ødegaard set the tone early, firing the Gunners ahead in just the second minute. While Erling Haaland briefly gave City hope with a 55th-minute equalizer—his 250th senior career goal—Arsenal responded in emphatic fashion, with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri both getting on the scoresheet in a ruthless second-half display.

The win extended Arsenal’s unbeaten league run to 14 games, moving them to 50 points from 24 matches, while leaders Liverpool sit on 56 with a game in hand. City, now fourth on 41 points, saw their hopes of a historic fifth successive title take a significant blow.

Despite claims that Arsenal have been overly reliant on set-piece goals this season, Mikel Arteta’s side showcased attacking flair and fluidity to secure their biggest home win of the campaign.

"It was a top game, a top performance, and with the fans and the atmosphere, it can't be better, so very happy," Ødegaard said after the match. "In the end, I think we got what we deserved."

City, who had been on a six-game unbeaten run in the league, struggled for much of the match, aside from a brief spell before halftime when Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya made crucial saves.

"It is difficult. I think all of us don't take losing well," City defender John Stones admitted. "It is hard to put into words straight after a game like that. How we played in the last 30 minutes was not acceptable."

Arsenal capitalized on early defensive errors, with Manuel Akanji losing possession under pressure from Stones, allowing Kai Havertz to set up Ødegaard for the opener. City’s defensive frailties were further exposed when Gabriel Martinelli found the net shortly after, only for the goal to be ruled offside.

Haaland had been virtually absent in the first half, touching the ball just six times, but he made an impact after the break, heading in Savinho’s cross to level the score. However, Arsenal wasted no time reclaiming control—just 38 seconds later, Phil Foden lost possession, leading to a Thomas Partey strike that deflected off Stones, leaving Stefan Ortega helpless.

With the momentum firmly in their favor, Arsenal piled on the pressure. Declan Rice provided the assist for Lewis-Skelly, who drilled a right-footed effort past Ortega, before Havertz made amends for an earlier miss by slotting home Martinelli’s pass. The final blow came from substitute Nwaneri, who sealed the rout with a sublime curling finish.

As Arsenal turn their attention to overturning a 2-0 deficit in Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final against Newcastle, City must regroup ahead of a high-stakes Champions League showdown with Real Madrid.

"You cannot finish in the way we played, we could've scored three more, but the team has to be stable," Pep Guardiola reflected after the crushing defeat.
