Arsenal beat Brighton 2–1 to reclaim Premier League top spot

Arsenal overcame a mounting defensive injury crisis to reclaim top spot in the Premier League with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Emirates Stadium, extending their title credentials in a tense Saturday afternoon encounter.
Mikel Arteta’s side entered the weekend under pressure after Manchester City briefly moved above them with a 2–1 win over Nottingham Forest earlier in the day. But Arsenal responded with composure and resilience, grinding out a third consecutive league victory to sit two points clear at the summit.
Odegaard leads from the front
Despite being stripped of several first-choice defenders, Arsenal started on the front foot and were rewarded for their intensity inside the opening quarter-hour.
A costly error from Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen handed possession to Bukayo Saka, who quickly fed Martin Ødegaard. The Arsenal captain swept home a precise low finish from the edge of the area to open the scoring in the 14th minute. The goal ended Ødegaard’s personal drought stretching back to May and set the tone for a dominant first-half display from the hosts.
Arsenal, missing multiple defenders including Riccardo Calafiori, who was injured during the warm-up, showed little sign of disruption. With Ben White, Jurrien Timber and Cristhian Mosquera also unavailable, Arteta was forced into a reshuffle that saw Declan Rice deployed at right-back and teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly start on the left.
Set-Piece strength strikes again
The Gunners continued to threaten after the break and doubled their lead in the 52nd minute, once again capitalising from a set-piece.
Rice’s inswinging corner caused chaos in the Brighton box, with Georginio Rutter inadvertently heading into his own net under pressure. It extended Arsenal’s remarkable set-piece scoring record this season and marked their fourth own goal forced in the last six league strikes.
At that stage, Brighton had been second best, failing to register a single shot in the first half as Arsenal controlled territory and tempo.

Against the run of play, Brighton were handed a lifeline in the 64th minute. Yasin Ayari’s effort struck the post and rebounded kindly for Diego Gomez, who reacted quickest to slot home from close range.
The goal injected belief into Roberto De Zerbi’s side and shifted the momentum, prompting Arteta to introduce Gabriel Magalhães, making his return from injury, to stabilise the defence.
Brighton pushed for an equaliser late on, and Arsenal were briefly rattled when Yankuba Minteh unleashed a powerful long-range strike, forcing David Raya into a superb fingertip save to preserve the lead.
The Gunners held firm in the closing stages to secure all three points and maintain their strong record when scoring first this season.
Title Race Context
The result restores Arsenal to the top of the Premier League table, two points ahead of Manchester City, and underlines their growing maturity in tight contests.
Attention now turns to a crucial end-of-year showdown, with Aston Villa visiting the Emirates on December 30, a fixture that could further shape the title race as the season approaches its midpoint.
