Arsenal’s Kepa Arrizabalaga eyes League Cup statement against Chelsea

Kepa Arrizabalaga could be set for an emotionally charged reunion as Arsenal prepare to face Chelsea in the League Cup semi-finals, with the Spanish goalkeeper eager to build on his growing influence in the competition.

The 31-year-old played a decisive role on Tuesday night as Arsenal booked their place in the last four, edging Crystal Palace 8–7 on penalties after a tense 1–1 draw at the Emirates Stadium. Kepa emerged as the hero of the shootout, saving Maxence Lacroix’s spot-kick to send the Gunners through.

Having spent seven years at Chelsea before completing a move to north London in pre-season, Kepa now stands between his former club and a place in the first major final of the season.

League Cup becoming Kepa’s stage at Arsenal

All three of Kepa’s appearances for Arsenal so far have come in the League Cup, and the competition has already provided him with a platform to make an impact while deputising for first-choice goalkeeper David Raya.

Speaking after the dramatic quarter-final win, Kepa made it clear that Arsenal are fully committed to chasing silverware.

“If you want to win trophies, you have to face strong teams,” he said. “Both semi-finals are massive games. It will be tough, but we’ll prepare properly and we’ll be ready to go for it.

Chelsea reunion looms in two-legged semi-final

Arsenal will face Chelsea over two legs, with the first match at Stamford Bridge on January 14, before the return fixture at the Emirates Stadium on February 3. A place at Wembley awaits the aggregate winner.

For Kepa, the tie carries added significance. After years as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper during spells of success and scrutiny, he now has the opportunity to deny his former side a route to silverware while strengthening his standing at Arsenal.

Late goals a growing concern for Arsenal

Despite the victory over Palace, Kepa acknowledged that Arsenal must address a worrying trend of late defensive lapses. Marc Guehi’s stoppage-time equaliser marked the third occasion in the Gunners’ last five matches that they have conceded in or beyond the 90th minute.

“It’s something we need to look at,” Kepa admitted. “We’ve conceded late in a few games, but the most important thing is that we’re through.

The Spaniard felt Arsenal had done enough to settle the tie before penalties, particularly in a dominant first-half display.

“We should have scored a couple in the first half. We played really well. In the second half it was more 50-50.”

Kepa also highlighted the mental demands of the shootout, especially after the frustration of conceding so late in the match.

“Emotionally, you have to stay focused and strong,” he said. “When you concede in the last minute and then go to penalties, you need a complete change of mindset.”

He praised his teammates for their composure from the spot, crediting them for creating the opportunity that allowed him to make the decisive save.

“The guys took amazing penalties. They kept us in the game and gave me the chance to make the save, and it worked.”

With Arsenal firmly in the title race domestically and now two games from Wembley, Kepa’s performances in the League Cup could yet prove pivotal. A strong showing against Chelsea would not only push the Gunners closer to silverware, but also underline the goalkeeper’s growing importance in Mikel Arteta’s squad.
