Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool: Gunners miss chance to open eight-point title gap

Arsenal missed a golden opportunity to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League table after being held to a 0–0 draw by Liverpool in a tense encounter at the Emirates Stadium.

With Manchester City and Aston Villa dropping points earlier in the week, Mikel Arteta’s side knew victory would have pushed them eight points clear in the title race. Instead, a frustrating night saw the Gunners settle for a single point, extending their advantage to six while leaving a sense of unfinished business in north London.

Bright start, missed opportunities

The Emirates crackled with expectation in the early stages as Arsenal began on the front foot, pressing high and looking to impose themselves. Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice both tested Alisson Becker from range, but Liverpool’s goalkeeper remained untroubled.

Despite Arsenal’s early control, it was the visitors who came closest to opening the scoring before the break. A defensive mix-up between David Raya and William Saliba allowed Conor Bradley to attempt a clever lob, only for the crossbar to deny Liverpool a surprise lead.

That moment shifted the rhythm slightly, with Liverpool growing into the contest and Arsenal unable to convert promising situations into clear-cut chances.

Liverpool take control after the break

The second half told a very different story. Liverpool, unbeaten in their last 10 matches across all competitions, dictated possession and drained the energy from both Arsenal and the home crowd.

Arne Slot’s side circulated the ball confidently, forcing Arsenal deeper and limiting them to just 35 percent possessionafter the interval. Despite their dominance, Liverpool struggled to turn control into clear chances, with Dominik Szoboszlai’s long-range efforts proving their main threat.

Arsenal, by contrast, barely registered an attacking presence until stoppage time.

Late pressure fails to deliver breakthrough

Substitutes Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli injected urgency late on, both forcing saves from Alisson as Arsenal pushed desperately for a winner.

The closest moment came deep into added time when Gabriel’s header flashed just wide, leaving the defender visibly distraught as the final whistle followed moments later.

In total, Arsenal managed only three second-half shots, all arriving in stoppage time, a statistic that underlined their struggle to seize control when it mattered most.

Title race still open

While the draw was far from disastrous, it felt like a missed chance. Arsenal remain top of the Premier League and six points clear of their nearest challengers, but the performance raised questions about how they handle pressure as expectations grow.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will take encouragement from a disciplined display away from home, showing resilience, composure and a champion’s mindset, even if the cutting edge was missing.

Mikel Arteta reflected on a demanding festive period and the fine margins involved: “The margins are very small. We had two different halves. In the first we dominated and created big situations but lacked the final quality. In the second half we struggled more. If you cannot win it, you cannot lose it.”

What this result means

  • Arsenal remain top of the Premier League, six points clear
  • Liverpool extend their unbeaten run to 10 matches
  • Manchester City and Aston Villa stay within striking distance
  • The title race remains wide open heading into the second half of the season
