Arsenal Returns to Champions League in Style, Dominating PSV Eindhoven with a 4-0 Victory

Arsenal's triumphant return to the Champions League after a six-year hiatus was nothing short of spectacular as they overpowered PSV Eindhoven 4-0 on a rain-soaked evening at Emirates Stadium. Determined to make up for lost time, Arsenal wasted no time and surged to a commanding 3-0 lead by the 38th minute. PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez made a couple of stellar saves to prevent an even more lopsided scoreline.
In this downpour of a game, Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Jesus all found the net in the first half, while Martin Odegaard added the final flourish with a stunning long-range strike in the 70th minute.
Speaking after the match, Odegaard remarked, "I think you saw the motivation, the energy straight from the start. To be back in this competition is huge for us as a club, and I think you saw that on the pitch today. We really enjoyed it."
Arsenal, under Arsene Wenger's reign, had qualified for the Champions League for 19 consecutive seasons but had been absent from the competition since 2016-17. PSV, on the other hand, last graced the Champions League five years ago. The two teams had previously clashed in the Europa League group stage last season, with Arsenal winning 1-0 at home, but this contest proved to be a far more one-sided affair.
Saka initiated the scoring in the eighth minute by evading the U.S. international Sergino Dest and coolly slotting in the rebound after Benitez had parried away a low shot from Odegaard. Saka then turned provider, setting up Trossard on the edge of the box in the 20th minute, and the Belgian rifled a precise right-footed shot just inside the far post.
The baton of creating goals was passed to Trossard for Arsenal's third, as he delivered a cross from the left, beautifully met by Jesus, who controlled the ball with one touch and unleashed a rocket into the far corner with his second touch. Jesus was making his season debut following recovery from a knee injury.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta lauded his team, saying, "Today I think we were really good in both boxes. In the Champions League, when you're really good in both boxes, you have a great chance." PSV had started brightly and tested Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya with a couple of low shots on the slick surface in the opening minutes. However, the visitors seldom posed a threat again until a counterattack in the 54th minute when Johan Bakayoko's attempt was a feeble shot straight at Raya.
Odegaard added the icing on the cake by smashing a low, 25-yard strike past the outstretched Benitez after receiving a pass from substitute Reiss Nelson.
The result put an end to PSV's perfect start to the season after winning their first four games in the Dutch league. In contrast, Arsenal remained unbeaten in all competitions. PSV defender Jordan Teze commented, "This was not a shock for us. We knew what to expect here. Arsenal is a really good team, they have a lot of quality, and they play in a very smart way. We don't come up against teams like that in the Dutch competition."
In the other Group B match, Sevilla and Lens settled for a 1-1 draw in Spain.
