Arsenal secure Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea in £5m deal

Arsenal have completed the signing of Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea for a reported fee of £5 million, marking their first major move of the summer transfer window. The North London club triggered a buyout clause in Kepa's Chelsea contract to secure his services, as manager Mikel Arteta aims to build a squad capable of finally clinching the Premier League title.

Once the most expensive goalkeeper in football history following his £71 million move from Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea in 2018, Kepa's time at Stamford Bridge was a rollercoaster. While he showed moments of brilliance, the Spanish international ultimately fell out of favour, losing his starting spot and going on loan spells to Real Madrid and Bournemouth.

Now at age 30, Kepa gets a fresh start in North London, joining an Arsenal side that has finished runners-up in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons and is hungry for silverware.

Premier League Goalkeeper Transfers: Arsenal boost depth behind David Raya

Kepa is expected to play a supporting role behind fellow Spaniard David Raya, who has cemented himself as Arsenal's first-choice goalkeeper. The addition of Kepa not only enhances squad depth but also injects top-level experience into the dressing room.

“I think we are so close to winning and, hopefully, altogether, we can achieve it,” Kepa said in his official unveiling. “I’ve watched Arsenal grow under Arteta, and I believe this is the right place to fight for trophies again.”

Mikel Arteta speaks on Kepa deal: “He has a real hunger to win”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised the club’s newest addition, citing his competitive spirit and ability to raise the standard in training and matchdays alike.

“We are really happy to have Kepa joining us,” Arteta said. “He brings a wealth of experience, which his teammates will benefit from, and he has a real hunger to win. Kepa works hard and will elevate our levels. I know he will fit in perfectly, already knowing some of his teammates, and we are really excited about his future with us.”

Arsenal Summer Signings 2025: Who’s next after Kepa?

Kepa's arrival marks the beginning of what could be a busy transfer window at the Emirates. Reports suggest that Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad is on the verge of joining the Gunners, while talks with Christian Nørgaard, Brentford’s captain, are progressing well.

With these additions, Arsenal’s intent to challenge Manchester City and others for the league title is clearer than ever.

Arsenal's 2025-26 Season Objectives: Silverware is the target

Despite strong performances in recent campaigns, Arsenal have not lifted a major trophy since their 2020 FA Cup triumph. With a blend of youth and experience, Arteta is determined to end the drought and guide the club back to glory.

The signing of Kepa is more than just a move for depth, it’s a statement of intent. As pre-season approaches, the Gunners look more prepared than ever to launch a serious title charge across domestic and European competitions.
