Arsenal set to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea

Arsenal are poised to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga this week, with the deal reportedly close to completion. The 30-year-old Spaniard is set to arrive at the Emirates Stadium after Arsenal triggered his modest £5 million release clause — a figure made possible after Kepa extended his Chelsea contract last summer before going on a successful loan at Bournemouth.

Kepa to challenge Raya in All-Spanish Goalkeeper battle

Kepa will be expected to compete with David Raya for the number one spot under Mikel Arteta. The Gunners had been searching for a reliable deputy after deciding against making Neto’s loan from Bournemouth permanent, leaving a gap in the goalkeeping department.

Despite being labeled a back-up signing, Kepa’s pedigree and experience — including a recent La Liga and Champions League double with Real Madrid (2023–24) — could see him push for regular minutes.

Career Revival on the cards?

Kepa remains the most expensive goalkeeper in history, having joined Chelsea in 2018 for a staggering £72 million from Athletic Bilbao. He made 163 appearances for the Blues and won four major trophies, including the UEFA Europa League and FIFA Club World Cup. However, inconsistency and managerial changes saw him fall down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

A loan spell at Real Madrid helped revive his reputation, and his time at Bournemouth last season — where he played a pivotal role in keeping the Cherries up — has re-established him as a top-tier option.

Arsenal’s Ambition Clear

Arsenal’s decision to invest in Kepa shows a continued desire to bolster squad depth in every position. With Champions League, Premier League, and domestic cup campaigns to navigate, Arteta is keen to avoid the drop-offs seen in key moments last season.

Kepa’s arrival could also spell uncertainty for current third-choice keeper Karl Hein, who may now be sent on loan to gain experience.

What’s Next?

Kepa is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days, with official confirmation likely before the weekend. He will join the Gunners for their pre-season U.S. tour, where fans may get an early glimpse of Spain’s two most expensive goalkeepers in the same squad.
